Here is the new fish I bought.....

TADA....

THE DENISONII BARB.

I got me a 3 inch pair to go with the clowns and they are all gelling very well. Though I have read they like temps upto 27-30 degrees C, mine love the warmer water in my tank, and are a bright bright red colour along the stripe.

They are also very playful, and are now behaving like clown loaches.

If anybody has kept these fish and has any experience with them, please let me know. Good, bad, ugly, anything would do.

I am keeping these for the first time, they have long been on my wishlist and I finally went out and got them.

I really don't know much about them but below is a link with some info that might help.

They seem to be "new" to the hobby. Someone from the UK was reporting them to be around $15 a par (if I remember correctly :%)).

Congrats on the addition they'll be lovely .

SO JEALOUS!!

denison's are the residents of my tank of the future (note to self: buy bigger house, then buy more fishtanks...) they are stunning! they are schoolers, happier in bigger groups, so the more of them you can get, the better. a fast, active fish but peaceful. they like a varied diet and love live food. lots of plants bring out the amazing colours. i have a mate with 15 of them - he converted from discus to denisonii, and i have to say they are one of the most spectacular fish around.

Denison's Barb is reported as being new to the hobby in the UK circa 2003. Therefore there is still a lot to learn about them. And, they're woefully expensive over here - £30 a pair. Don't know how that translates into rupees, and whether that compares favourably or not with the price you paid, but I suspect they'll be expensive everywhere until someone begins breeding them in numbers.

Info I have to date is that they can reach 6 inches long, possibly a little more, are very active, fast swimming Barbs that need a lot of space, and thanks to the combination of swimming athleticism and torpedo shaped body, even if they haven't been labelled as jumpers by people who've kept them to date, exercise caution and keep them covered. I've had Rummy Nose Tetras go carpet surfing in the past, and they are a fish with a similar body plan and active swimming habit. Last thing you want to do is shell out a small fortune on Denison's only to have them leap out of the tank when you're not watching ...

Clowny! What an awesome find Bensaf was recommending I get a couple of those for my 125 awhile back, but I couldn't find them, but really like the looks of them, If I can find the link I got about them, I'll post it later, otherwise get ahold of bensaf, he should know something about them...I never could find them...heidi

More news. Denisonii's behave a lot like my clown loaches. They even like chasing each other and one of them wants to be the boss, so he is fighting with the other guy. Not hurtful fighting, but tough fighting nevertheless.

More news, I saw this amazing 6 inch pair of Denizonii's for Rs. 450 (for two) that would translate into about $9 and I think its Rs. 82 to a pound, which would be like 5.5 pounds.

I am sure that makes y'all jealous of me!

They are a rare fish, and I want a medium sized pair because the full sized ones may be very old specimens. I like to watch my fish grow in front of my eyes, so I am going to have to wait till they are in season again to make a school of them. I want a school of denisonii's and green tiger barbs to go with my school of 19 fat fat clown loaches.

Denison barbs are very intelligent fish.
When you keep them in a school (which you really should do to experience their best behaviour), you'll see they are very social. When one of the fish discovers food, it will go and get the others before starting to eat.
They're very active and very pretty.

I recommend you get at least 3 more to see their full natural behaviour. I know they're terribly expensive, but I aslo think you should give them the best you can to keep them happy.

By the way: I'm jealous too!!

Thanks, I really do want to build a school of them and another school of tiger barbs for this fish tank. Then I will have the best looking huge schools of clown loaches, green tiger barbs and zebra loaches.

Here my list of fish:

19 clown loaches who are growing fatter by the minute.
6 Denison Barbs
12 green tiger barbs
5 zebra loaches

I am going to have to wait until after the monsoon next year to get some more, because these fish are seasonal, and I want a medium size so I can watch them grow

Oh, and forgot to mention for Calil, I do have a covered tank. The lid is always on for my 19 clowns, I dont want them nosediving out into the land

One last Edit.

Here is a link that all Denison Barbs would love to see

An AGA tank that won the first place with a huge school of Denisons.

Hmmm, these fish are commonly called Rose Line Sharks here. They're beautiful fish, but at $24.99 a pop, I can't see half my paycheck going to making that school. Congratulations, maybe one day I'll set up a tank with some of those...

Yes, they like very warm soft water, because they come from Kerala in India from fast flowing backwaters and streams.

The higher the temp the better, mine are at 33 degrees C (coz of the hot Indian summer) but I think they should do well at 28-30.

Eventho the profile says 25 degrees C is optimum, the place they come from is at a constant 40 degrees C or above on land, so I assume it would be over 30 Degrees C in the water.

Very sensitive to chemicals in water, especially chlorine, they come from rivers not yet polluted by man and live with tiger barbs in the wild.

FYI. Kerala is my husband's home town, and he says if you swim in the river water, or bathe, the barbs will give you nice little nips on your calves
