When I get them, I will let you know how much they cost.
Do you happen to have a "Petcetera" down there?

If you are getting a separate tank, I did say up the school to 12 or so, and get a 75 gal because a school of 6 is going to need that much space to swim anyway.

They are quite fast, but will not upset ur discus as they are not nippy or aggressive outside of their own group. Within the group, they show little aggression, mostly I think to establish a pecking order, but I really need to add some more to be sure. In a few months time, you should be ready to give me some advice on how to keep a good school of Denisons.

Thanks for all the advice Clowny!
I am really excited about getting these fish.
IF they prove to be too energetic or upset my discus, I may get them their own tank.
What would you recommend as a good size tank for 6 Denisonis as centerpeices and them just a few companion fish like say some loaches or corys and some white cloud minnows or hatchetfish?
Like:
6 Denisoni's
6 Queen Botia
12 White Cloud Minnows or 6 Silver Hatchets
or 12 Marble Hatchets

Always keep temps above 25 degrees. 27 degrees minimum, if the temp drops too low, their red lines will fade and turn pink instead of a bright red. Remember to cure the water for chlorine before adding to tank, they come from very very very clean waters.

With them, because they are from the tropical warm waters of India, temp is key, and fast flowing water is always good. Feed them well, they are little pigs, and aggressive feeders, they give my clown loaches competition, u might want to watch to see if the discuss is getting enuff food. If you ordered 6, well add 6, ensure good filteration tho, and good luck with them

Hi,
I have actually ordered 6 of them
I was planning on adding them all at once.
I have ordered small "less than 2 inches" size.
They have not come yet they were "too weak to ship, wait 2 weeks", so that will be next weekend.
My Tank is a community tank, no strong or aggressive fish.
It is quite warm as I have a pair of Discus.
It has good flow with 2 canister filters and 2 large air stones.

Yup, I got them $2 a piece, but on the other hand, I get fish like Clowns at $3 a piece, and tiger barbs at 50 cents, all of which I consider very very expensive.

Eventho I am close to the source, these are very difficult to catch in the wild, given that they come from the fast moving streams in Kerala, and have been on the endangered species list, tho they were taken off it recently.

Nice fish, will exhibit a behaviour somewhere in between barbs and cyprinids, like to nip each other, tho are not nippy or agressive towards other fish. Can be kept with large aggressive cichlids because of their size (yup, 6 inches plus and they grow very fast), the rate of growth, will match the pace of a cichlids growth, and because they are aggressive feeders.

Very sensitive to water changes, need high aeration and will happily stand warmer temps (come from a land where water temps are over 30 degrees C). Will appreciate fast moving water, so keep that powerhead handy.

Oh, and add few at a time, eventho u might take ages to find more fish to build a school, I bought 2 and havent found any more yet, but because they are so sensitive, I would say add in small numbers of 2s or 3s.

Well, the company has very strict standards before they ship fish, and this batch of Denisonis looked not up to snuff, so now I gotta wait at least another 2 weeks.
Apparently they ship well, but the company wants them to look good prior to shipping. I also am ordering the "small" size, which apparently they dont ship out very often.
Thats ok though, I am willing to wait.
The lady at the store HQ says that the price on her wholesale list is 4.95 CAD, so she suspects I will be charged around 7.99-9.99 for a pair. Not a bad price considering I was willing to pay 25 bucks a pair or more for them
I am thinking if they come in nicely, I may start shipping em out at that price I could make a tidy profit, even considering packing materials.

Ah, thats a shame.
Petcetera here is one of those chain stores- but the one local to me always has excellent fish.
Probably 80% of my stock has come from them.
I have had less troubles with any of their fish than
those fish I get at expensive prices from specialty shops.
I dont know why- perhaps it just depends on who works where, I dunno.
Anyway, they have great prices on fish, and are buy 1 get 1 fish free if you have a membership.
I am an "Elite" member- and also get 10% off during 3 months of the year.

No. In California we have but Petsmart and Petco, neither of which I go to unless I'm cruising for tanks and driftwood.

Hi Guys,
looks like I will be not long away from getting my denisoni barbs (sp?).
The store has found them, and will be ordering them in a couple weeks with their next livestock order
If I wanted to try breeding these guys, what would I require?

Hey Noodles,
well I hope mine wont be that expensive.
The lady who is ordering them told me in her email that the price from the supplier was comparable to that of "large tiger barbs" or "flying foxes".
I am getting her to order in "small" ones, and at this store you get 2 fish for the price of 1 always.

$2 apiece? Yeep.

They're £30 a pair here in the UK. That's around $58 US a pair.

Turn up at your LFS with 100 or so tank-raised Denison's and you could almost buy a second-hand car with the proceeds.

Yep, I believe she gets them for about $2 U.S. apiece.

If you could establish a sucessful breeding program, that would enable you to dictate P. denisonii prices to your lfs or fish club, if you belong to one. These little fellas are hot right now, and demand is sky-high. They're awesome fish.
