I saw some danios in my local petstore and they were red. The guy was telling me something about coral genes or something ( i was to busy watching panda cories ) But i've heard about it a couple of times. In a couple of the posts. COuld somebody explain this to me. ANd could you tell me what you think about it. By the way it was $8.99 while normal zebra are $.99 and long finned are $1.50.

Yeah. These are called "Glofish". They do indeed have a coral gene that makes them flouresce. Since I don't have a lot of money, usually my money goes to something OTHER than a schooling fish over $5...

In all other ways except for the glowing gene, they're quite normal. People disagree with the genetic modification, but others are okay with it as it does not harm the fish.

They're everywhere around here. Hubby wanted me to buy some because they had the special lighting on them. As soon as they turned on the regular light though they looked like normal fish. So if you do buy them, you may want to buy that $35 special light to make them glow nice.

I have about 9 glo fish right now, and have had some others. They all have been super healthy, much like Zebra Danio's are suppose to be.

I've only seen them at one store HERE. I've seen good examples and bad specimins. I don't need any special light to enjoy them, they look great under anything IME.
Here they are $6.99 each or $19.99 for 3 of them.

Wondefull little fish.

You might enjoy these pictures of mine. So you can see how nice they look.

I don't live in California either but yes they are currently banned.

I was just in California 2 weeks ago. And I remember reading something about them in a newspaper. There is going to be a voting over whether to keep the ban or to allow the sale of the Glofish.

The extra gene in the Glofish is essentially no different than other cross breeds, only the methods used to achieve it are a little more "high-tech".

Here they are $5.99 AT lfs. Hubby wanted some, too, but the only tank I'd put them in is my 125 gal and i'm NOT spending that much on a school of Danios lol.
I did set up a 12 gal for my 7 y.o. son and he picked these..starting with 3 will probably end up with about 20. Got a blacklight strip to mount on the wall behind the tank..they really look nice under normal (powerglo) light though IMHO. Son also picked out some neon rocks and neon glo in the dark plastic plants..so it's a psychadelic tank!

here they are 9.99 and i just don't have that kind of money for a danio. But that psychadelic tank sounds like a cool idea.
