For some unknown reason, my lone Gold Barb decided to end it all by jumping from the tank.

Thing is, I had noticed he was getting a little rough around the edges, and since he was around 4 years old and living under some stress for the last while, was thinking I might see the end of him sometime soon, but not like this!!

Too bad my little girl was having a sleepover and woke up with a tiny crispy fish next to her pillow in the morning... Talk about yelling!!

*sigh*
Watch out folks, the l'il buggers can jump!!

So sorry about your loss, but next time keep the tank lid closed, as most fish can jump & die.

Barbs sure are good at jumping. Tinfoil barbs are especially skilled, large ones can jump pretty danged far. Even small barbs can clear a few inches out of the water.

Sorry to hear about your critter.

one of the pet stores in my area had someone bring in a big 5-6 inch tinfoil barb, and if was only in the tank for 20 min. and it jumped. the fish guy was on his lunch, and when he got back, he tried to rescue it, but it was too late.

i don't find that my tiger barbs are very good jumpers, but my killis will jump a good 3-4 inches out of the water to snatch a bloodworm from my hand.

Wow what a story
Sorry he had to go that way LCJ , gold barbs are some of my favs .
I wonder if barbs are socially inept. I'd managed to have a rosy barb jump from a covered 10 gallon, a coworker found him one morning. It was right after I'd added a second male to the tank, I have a feeling it was peer pressure that drove him, that or rejection from the girl .
