I've heard that goldfish can grow to immense sizes. is this just a common misconception, or what??

feeder fish, aka comet/common gold fishes, will out grow the home aquarium, and the fancier types vary. but most gold fish will grow to large. and koi of course will grow huge.

wouldn't this be good in a goldfish section

yea, but i would of guessed it would be in the coldwater section.

Goldfish are cyprinids, BettaChris

Fancy goldfish max out at about 12"-16"
Common feeders hit about 2 feet.

Yes they grow pretty big & you need a pond to keep them.

Big being 2-3 feet for the "feeder" fish. What's more is that they are active. And that's something I really can't put enough stress on. You don't want a 2 foot fish stuck in a 2.5 foot tank when they love to streach their fins! Which is why they need the space that ponds provide.
Fancy goldfish can often be kept in 75 gallon or larger tanks. 55 is just a bit too narrow for one to be comfortable in. In a 75 you could keep 2 or three fancy goldfish given that they have enough filtraration. Each fish needs 20+ gallons of the space for themselves while they're small.
