This is for a 40 gallon tank. I'm just wondering what people here keep with their rasboras and what they would recommend. I don't have my heart set on anything really, just something colorful. Also I'm not sure on how many to put in and how to stock it, so any help with that would be appreciated. There's no fish in the tank currently.

Harlequins are peaceful. Mine are in an Asian biotope with small gouramis (honey, sparkling), cherry barbs, and kuhlis. They're good schoolers so get as many as you can depending on what other fish you decide on.

You could add one or two angels, they come in a big variety of colors and markings. Or maybe a larger gourami such as the pearl.

Then perhaps something for the bottom, a nice group of cories or loaches.

I have pearl gouramis and loaches with my school of 9 harlequins. They are great schoolers (like was mentioned before) and I've never seen them nip at any of the other tank mates. I really think they would be fine with most tankmates. Good luck with whatever you choose!

They go well with most other fish. I have kept them with Rummynose tetras and black phantoms no problem. They are with some Keyhole cichlids and angels right now. I would recommend a school of at least 8-10. They look great in a good sizes school.

Ohhhh! Harlies I really like Theresa's idea, I also like the idea of Rummies. Rummies have awesome little color patterns for such little dOOds, adorable IMO. So are gold barbs, but they might be a little too active for your harlies.

I was actually thinking something like a dwarf gourami and a pair of cherry barbs, and about 10 rasboaras, with that set up could I add anything else? Like maybe some platies, guppies, or any other ideas?

In a 40 gallon, you could def. do that. Plenty of room.

I'd suggest a school of bottom dwellers, like cories! Or maybe some loaches if you wanted, but I like cories.

I think you have enough room in there for a whole 'nother school of something...anything you're interested in? *looks at stocking list again*

*ponders*

EDIT: Aren't you the guy who had the like 3948590385 gallon tank at the restaurent...?

yes I am that guy, things are still in the works for that.

Cories sound fun, used to have some of them back in the day. Any certain one you would recommend?

Ah.

Well, my favorite cory is the panda, stays nice and small, but can be pricey in some cases...check out the corydoras collection thread in Bottom Feeder that sirbooks started for some more ideas. clickage!!!

www.planetcatfish.com has a pretty good variety of cories too.

It'd prolly be easier if you told us which ones were available to you.

What size tank again?

EDIT: Oh, right, 40 gallon

in my 46 gallon i have 15 harleys with 4 yo-yo loaches and a BN. the large school looks very nice amongst the plants, if i do say so myself

every now and then one might take a nip at another one, which is to be expected in a large school - creating a hierarchy and all. the strange thing is this: i've also seen two of them circle around eachother doing this very rapid "shimmy". they shake shake shake, then dart at eachother, all while circling very close. i always wondered if it's a mating dance or if they're about to kill eachother.

Back in the saddle!

Yeah, you'd figure in a nice big school there would be some fighting, I doubt any would make it an objective to attack though.

For the cories I was thinking pandas after looking around, plus my girlfriend thinks they're cute. How many you think I could put in there with some room for some small loner/pair/trios of fish.

I have a school of rasboras in a 46gal. They live with cardinal tetras, a platy, female bettas, bronze corys, and a pleco. In the past, they shared the tank with a dwarf gaurami, a moonlight gaurami, and a Bolivian Ram. I never once saw ANY of these fish pick on a rasbora, or a cardinal for that matter. They picked on each other, and the moonlight and the ram had to be returned, but the little fish seem to be perfectly fine with all this options.

Hope this helps.

-Dennis

So, basically anything that's peaceful. I think everybody here has kept them with something I was looking at, so I don't think I'll have very many problems. Thanks for all your help I think I can start plannin out my tank now.
