Okay...I did a bad bad thing.

I spent money on something that wasn't marine related.

Come hurt me Nate...

So anyway, from the moment I got my job, I always asked my boss to get in Pentazona barbs (Belted barbs) because I absolutely fell in love with Theresa_M’s the first time I saw them. The red color that they develop is beautiful.

So finally, this weekend at work, I discover a tank full of baby barbs that I’m not familiar with. I look at the label:

Pentazona barbs

Well… Then I realized the vertical bars on some were different from the vertical bars on the others; these were separated and labeled as Rombocellatus barbs. *shrugs* My boss tends to make up common names.

*is supposed to be doing homework*

I’ll google them later and see what I can find out and get an ID. Either way, the price was 6/$21, and I get a 25%? discount. Either way, they’re adorable and are acclimating with my other 6 gold barbs, who they will hopefully get along with, otherwise we have a big problem. I think there are some lonely 2 black phantom tetras too who I’ve been meaning to bring back to the store…

My 6 gold barbs are in my 15 gallon, filtration is an AquaClear30 maybe? It’s one size up from mini. The tank has been up and running for months, heated to 78*-80*F. Levels should be fine but I’ll do a test on them later tonight if I have the time.

I’ve never seen these barbs before, I’m assuming they’ll eat the regular flakes, FD bloodworms, and frozen brine I normally feed. We’ll see how it goes.

So if anyone could maybe confirm about what they actually are, or anything about them that would help. They look like pentazonas, cept the vertical stripes are kinda bubbly shaped, and aren’t exactly parallel, if that makes any sense. Their face is kinda cherry red, and the rest is sorta orange. My boss claims they’ll color up nicely, I’m looking forward to watching them grow. They’re all a mere 1.5” or so, they look like fry compared to some of my gold barbs!

Dunno when I’ll be able to get a picture up, my cameras broken atm.

I solemnly swear that I will stop spending money on freshwater fish and only buy marine stuff.

*doesn’t tell Nate about the babe male balloon ram she has on hold*

My tank is so empty though.

Maybe if I could figure out how on earth to put a sump in my 72 gallon I would have something better to spend my money on.

*shrugs*

Sorry guys, this is kind of a long random ramble…first time I’ve been home/on a computer in three days and I really miss posting. Bare with me.

They look kinda like this little guy except not as cherry red yet, and the stripes still seem more bubbly instead of direct bands, like Theresa's have. *sigh*

Take a look at this website ... perfect match with Ferret's photos, almost as if the website has photographed Ferret's new fish for its info page!

Barbus (Puntius) pentazona

Heh, error. Ferret, you lifted the pic ... tut, tut!

Pentazoa barbs are one of my favorites: good color, peaceful, good schoolers.

This is my group when I first bought them last year:

Sorry, forgot I was going to add a closeup. Lfs had them with tigers, which explains the chewed up tail. The flecks are actually gold coloring, not ick.

They are called Rhombocellatus barbs. There's a couple of pictures of them in this link.
