Pregnancy question | |
fishyfishy26 Hobbyist Posts: 62 Kudos: 12 Votes: 0 Registered: 18-Mar-2007 | I keep seeing some rosy barbs at the LFS store that are very very pregnant..they are being kept with some platy but I am sure they are rosy barbs because of the different tail shape and the dot on the body. But I'm wondering do these fish breed in soft water, or does it matter. And if a fish that only breeds in soft water was taken out of the soft water and placed in hard water would an already preg. fish have her babies in the hard water or would she abort them or something. |

They may be carrying eggs, and chances are if you transfer the fish, even to the same type of water the stress of the move may very well take the fish out of the mood. Barbs are egg scatterers, and are usually bred in shallow tanks with either a net suspended midwater to let the eggs drop through, or with a clump of java moss for the eggs to land in. Higher temps, lower pH and live food in a widely varied diet usually stimulate breeding. |
