My lfs has several rainbow sharks in and they have peeked my interest. I have a 29 gallon tank and a 46 gallon bow front. Would these tanks be ok or do they need them bigger. And how aggressive are they. One guy says his shark is fine in his community tank( pick on one cherry barb but that was it)

One would do great in the 46 gallon. I wouldn't put one in the 29, since they do get 6 inches long. Remember, if you don't know this already, they CANNOT be kept with others of their kind. They have been known to be aggressive to other fish that look like them, such as RTBS and SAE. Some say they aren't aggressive, some find the vicious, it really just depends on the fish. As they get older I believe they get more aggressive.

Thanks for the info. I was told to keep them seperate. It is good to see I am getting some good advice from my LFS. I will probably get one for my 46 gallon tank and see how he does.

Fish, what would the point of that be? It would just mean more stress to the fish and possible stunting.

If he has the right sized tank, why would he put it in a tank that was too small? That's just pointless.

Some of them have a habit of picking on smaller fish while others tend to be a prefect community fish. As it gets larger, just keep an eye on it and if it tends to be too aggressive, don't write off the species, just get a different one. Mine's doing great with his tankmates as is.

And Janna will back me up, the albino ones are BEAUTIFUL.

I did look at the albino sharks but I already have 7-albino corys in the 46 tank. But I agree they are neat looking. Thanks again for the replys. Oh, how fast do they grow.

My bf had an albino rainbow shark..beautiful fish!
I can't give you an exact rate, but it outgrew his 30 gallon right quick, and it was only about and inch and a half when he got it.
Also, it was always a very peaceful fish...although he ate a lot LOL

It'll probly hit full-size (5-6" in about 12-18 months. If it isn't full size by then, it'll be getting close to it...

What do you think is a minimum fish tank size for the rainbow shark?

Sorry about the late response bethino. For a rainbow shark, I think the minimum tank size should be 30-35 gallons. Ideal would be AT LEAST 45 gallons, but they would end up living a fine life with a minimum of 30...

i wish my LFS gave me some good advice -_- i have 2 rainbow sharks and 2 albino rainbow sharks... they fought a bit by ramming each other with their sides but they stopped now...

I hope you're in the process of getting more and bigger tanks for those sharks Azn, cuz they may have quit their bickering for the time being, but such peace won't last too long. If more/bigger tanks is not an option, then I highly recommend you take back at least three of the sharks, and the ebst would be for all four to be returned. A 30 gallon is not large enough for one Rainbow shark, much less four. I'm sorry that you got stuck with the situation, but it would be best for the fish...

LFS wont take back the fishes... ill just have to figure out what to do... maybe give some to friends and relatives when they out grow my tank...
