Hi everyone,

do danios shoal together when there are about 10 of them?
I was thinking of getting some lemon tetra's for my tank but when visiting a local fish supplier i noticed some bright yellow danios (cant remember what exact ones they were) and i thought that these would stand out alot better than the lemon tetra's

Cheers

Danios will.
They wont be as tight as tetras, and may not hang out together much if at all once they're comfortable in their surroundings. So if you want schooling stick with tetras.

The only time my danios ever did anything resembling schooling was when they were frightened of a new fish (a scary 2 inch gold ram). Even then I wouldn't of called it schooling, they sort of were in a ball with each fish just swinmming real close to the other ones.

There is a difference between shoaling and schooling.

Danios are indeed shoaling fish, and will in fact shoal together no matter what number you have in your tank. This is also the case for most Tetras I have come across.

If you want nicely schooling fish you'd be better off looking towards Rasboras and not Danios or Tetras at all...

If they are frightened, they will stay together, but once they get used to the tank, they will roam aroung & don't school tight anymore.

My Danios shoal together only on occasion now. They used to do it more when I just got them and for a few weeks after, but as soon as they found out that they are the fastest fish in the tank they became VERY confident and started to disperse.

Nowadays, the only time they come together is when they play chase, which happens mostly in the morning after the lights go on. They chase each other around in groups of 2 to 3, like madmen. Some of them have established little territories in the tank and will chase away any intruder that is not bigger or stronger than them.

Overall, these guys create A LOT of action, but shoaling is a rare thing now.

Im sure the danios you saw were golden zebra danios. Mine schoal off and on- but they are really active and i have 10 or 11 of them. cant keep them counted their to busy.

I really like the danios, but if you want something that will stick together tightly- go with harlie rasboras.

I was told that Red Line Rasboras were very close schoolers, and was not disappointed with my small group of 6 at all!

Profile here: [link=http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/profiles/redline.xml]http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/profiles/redline.xml" style="COLOR: #0000FF[/link]

I only ever managed to keep 3 Harlequins so was never able to see if they schooled as well as my Red Lines, but they did seem to remain close together whenever I watched the tank....

I have 8 giant danios who are constantly together :%) In my personal experience though harlequin rasboras are the best schoolers.

What

Where does this piece of knowledge com from? Spawning every morning for 4 months in a row?

Littlecatjoe, I need more info on this one.

Thanks,

Ingo

PS: The glowlight rasboras that you mention above require a very low ph (5-6 based on FPs profile).
