29 gal aquarium? I am getting a new 29 gal tank this weekend and would like some suggestions of what and how many to put in it. I would like to get away from guppies, platies, and tetras...I would prefer it to be an aggressive/semi aggressive tank....Thanks for any all suggestions...OH, also, should i have real plants or plastic?
THanks!
Robin

Real or fake plants is a matter of personal preference and how much work you're willing to do.

You've posted in cyprinids but if you're interested in cichlids at all you might find some ideas here.

You could do a school of tiger barbs in a 29g along with some sort of bottom feeders. There are different danios available...harlequin rasboras make good looking schools, although they're not agressive. A favorite of mine is the belted barb, good color and a good schooler; again, not agressive.

You might also try some gold barbs, they are nicely colored fish, but are very peaceful. If you want a cichlid, you could go for a pair of rams, or maybe some of the shell-dwelling cichlids.

Tiger barbs are active (rather than outright aggressive, which they can sometimes be if left in too small of a school).

One of my new absolute favorites that are sometimes difficult to find are the gold barbs. Active and fun, and as gold as goldfish without getting 2 feet long.

To have good live plants, you'll likely have to upgrade the lighting to 2wpg and more. You'll also likely want to consider the more expensive substrates. They do take time as well and if you're looking for a quick aquascape maybe go with fake for now, and place real ones in gradually.

SO I could do 2 Angelfish and 8 of the Harlieqn (sp) Rasaboras? I think I was looking at that link correctly...What about a snail? I like snails and would like one in both my tanks...So here's what I'm looking at now...
29 gal w/:
2 Angelfish
8 Harlieqn Rasaboras
and 1 snail

Would that work? It's be different from what I have and well, I like that suggestion!
Thanks!
Robin

I think the setup you mention will work. If you want a snail, but don't want to have millions of snails crawling around your tank in a short amount of time, you might try an apple snail. They do not reproduce without a mate, are good cleaners, and are eye-catching. They can grow large though, about the size of an apple!

Okay, i've got another question. I posted a thread similar to this in another area but wanted to post this one as well.
Would this particular setup work for a 20 Tall (i've read somewhere that the stocking setup for a 29 gal and a 20gal tall can be the same)?

Pair of Angels
8 Harlieqn (sp) Rasaboras
and a snail (or would ghost shrimp be better?)

Thanks again for all ya'lls help! I'll eventually get this stocking thing down...

Stocking a 20 tall as heavily as a 29 gallon is not a good idea. For one, the 20 tall gallon has about 13 square inches less than a 29 gallon. Plus the obvious fact that a 29 gallon holds 9 more gallons than a 20 gallon.

For the 20 gallon tall, stick with just the 8 Harlequin Rasboras and a snail or ghost shrimp. The 20 gallon wouldn't give the angels the room they need to spread out their fins.

Or maybe the harlequins, shrimp or snail, and a dwarf gourami or pair of cherry barbs. Cherries do well in pairs and their coloring would look nice with the harlequins.
