What could I keep in a ten gallon tank. I've already read that tiger barbs can't be happy in a ten gallon tank. I was wondering about other types of barbs or even sharks. I think that red tailed sharks are very pretty, so I was wondering if I could keep a combination or whatever. I was just checking my options. I also would like my fish to be active and fun to watch, right now I have one goldfish in a ten gallon and she is a cool fish, but tends to do the same thing over and over again. Anything is helpful to me.

I'd skip out on the red-tail as well - a 6" fish with that kind of territorial aggression just can't be kept in a 10 gallon tank.

Since you're in Cyprinid Corner, how about danios? The ol' Zebra is a favorite for good reason, and then there are also Leopards, Pearls, a number of color varieties, GloFish, and the quite rare ones like Glowlights (D. choprae). A school of danios makes an excellent species tank for a ten.

On the barbs side, there are nice, smaller barbs - a medium group of Gold Barbs would make a lovely display, maybe 5 of them, or you could get a pair of Cherry barbs. Great fish, both of them.

EDIT: I'm assuming the goldfish won't be in the tank when you're adding fish, and that you know the goldfish will quickly outgrow that 10 gal.

Just to underscore what mousling said about your goldfish.

White cloud mountain minnows would work and they won't need a heater. White clouds are fairly active and colourful. You could put some Java Moss in there and they will probably even spawn for you.

My goldfish isn't very big and she has plenty of room, and no the fish won't go in with her, eventhough I would love to find her a friend, I know it wouldn't make for a happy tank. At the moment though my goldfish is good.

I just looked at that picture and all I have to say is... THAT'S A BIG FISH!! Do you know whose fish that is or is it just some random thing you found?

So, I could only keep either a pair of cherry barbs or a school of gold barbs?

Or danios, or white clouds, or any of lots of fish that aren't Cyprinids.

"...right now I have one goldfish in a ten gallon and she is a cool fish, but tends to do the same thing over and over again."

You have to remember, there isn't much room in a 10 gallon tank. So for the most part, any fish in a 10 gallon will look like it's doing the same thing over and over again.

That said, there are many small fish that can be kept in a 10 gallon. My favorites would be WCMMs, danios, and cories.

Also, I wouldn't get your goldfish a friend if I were you. The goldfish in that picture is the size that goldfish are supposed to get. In a ten gallon tank, your goldfish would never get that size because it doesn't have enough room to grow. Just because it doesn't have enough room doesn't mean that it's not growing at all though...

Inside, it will grow while its outside won't. This is a process known as stunting its growth. Obviously, it's not a very pleasant process...

I'm all for you keeping your goldfish, but I highly recommend getting a larger tank for him...

As for the fish for the ten gallon, 3-4 gold barbs would be okay or a pair of cherry barbs. I wouldn't go with anything that would get bigger. Some other options for that small of a tank include white clouds]http://www.fishprofiles.com/profiles/fw/profile.asp?id=Tanichthys+albonubes[/link], [link=guppies]http://www.fishprofiles.com/profiles/fw/profile.asp?id=Poecilia+reticulata[/link], or [link=tetras. The tetras link is just to the profile for Cardinal Tetras, but if you just look for tetras, you'll find enough profiles to provide you with hours of reading enjoyment...

PM/email/msg me if you have any questions/comments regarding me or my knowledge or if you want me to read a thread.
