brtaylor2000,
There's been much debate about them on this site. Here is what come sup from a search for glofish they've been discussed in many other threads as well.

Personally I didnt' like the idea, didnt' like them the first time I saw them, and still think the idea is stupid and that the fish aren't even attractive. Give me regular danios @$0.42 each anyday.

^_^

Personally, I wouldn't buy these fish because they are man-made. I know that they aren't hybrid, sick fish, like certain cichlids, but I still don't think it's natural. I'm not really a fan of danios anyway, because they can become nippy to fish that I like, such as angelfish.

I wouldn't get them just because they're danios, which I really have no desire to keep, but I don't find anything wrong with them personally...as you can read in the other threads...

PM/email/msg me if you have any questions/comments regarding me or my knowledge or if you want me to read a thread.

I don't have anything against them, since the "glow" doesn't hurt them at all.

I wouldn't get them though because they don't really "glow" and they are, to me, WAY over priced zebra danios. I would rather stick to danios, no wait, i would then go with WCMM!!!

I agree with Racso, my roommate has 6 zebra danio's and I read the "glo" are about $7.oo each. That would have been $42.00 for some danios. they may be nice, but not that nice!

The price isn't that great.
But I love my little guys. I have 7 of them, males and females, great specimens!

Some places have bad looking ones, others have great stock. Plus the nice looking fish go the fastest so you just might be missing them.

Danio's are great fish, now they have super colour with a purpose! They are made to detect toxins in water that are beyond our now adays test kits. So they do surve a purpose and part of the money you use to buy them goes back into research. Just for those that didn't bother to read about that part.

Here are some pictures of mine, which show good examples.

There's the links for the lazy ones.

As for their use, they are being designed to check streams for toxic wastes that are currently undetectable. The Glofish that are available right now are not perfected for that use yet, so the manufaturer of them has stated that a portion of the proceeds will go to continue the research to develop this skill. It works as a way to rationalize spending a little more for cool little orange zippy fish...

I saw you mention you're going to pick up an albino frog...just make sure you realize this is *probably* an ACF, African Clawed Frog, which gets very big and will not hesitate to hurt other fish. You might be better off getting the ADF, African Dwarf Frog, which stays very small and can be kept with many peaceful aquarium fish.

firstly about them glowing, they do glow but only under blacklight, they look quite cool under it.

as far as getting them, i see no problem with it at all, they are as happy and healthy as any normal danio, they are even breedable. the effect dosen't hurt them at all, all the ones you get now are descendants of the orignal glow fish, so none of them have under gone anything that normal danios haven't.

to be honest thou, i think any fish that is happy and healthy is fine, don't care if its a pure breed or not, as long as its happy and healthy and properly taken care of, i don't care whats in its blood. ppl don't disown dogs cause they are mix breeds, so why do it to fish.

I recently became the proud father of glowing danio fry. Sadly, I didn't realize this until it was too late (all but one munched), but the one has been reared to about an inch long now

42 cents for a zebra danio!!!!! Geez I feel ripped off now. The cheapest I have ever seen a zebra danio for here is 3.99 a peice. I myself pair 4.99 a pair for leopard danios and thought that was a decent price.
42 cents sheesh! You americans get your fish for ridiculously low prices! Guess when I want fish I should "make a run for the border" ]:%)
Personally the whole idea behind Glofish is a good idea, however, I still dont think I agree with the whole concept of breeding animals to meet our needs. BUT if you look at Angelzoo's pics, Im sure anyone could be convinced that those fish are gorgeous, healthy, and worthwhile. It just depends on what you like. For Us Canadians, the choice was made for us, the government banned all Genetically Modified Animals and Foods in Canada just a couple of months ago. So, regardless of what we want, we dont have that choice.
Also, I dont know about in the States if this is happening, but up here they have banned all imports of wild caught livestock. So if its a wild caught fish (or turtle, etc) and you want it, get em now, they arent gonna be around much longer.
