Would it be possible to keep a small school say five maybe six golden barb in a 10 gallon tank if they were the only inhabitants? Or are they too messy of fish to keep in a 10 gallon tank?

A school of six gold barbs would be just fine in a ten gallon by themselves. They don't produce too much waste, and they don't grow very large, so you could easily keep them in there. If you wanted, you could even add a few ottos to your tank, just to eat up any algae that you experienced.

Bio load wise a ten gallon could hold 5 gold barbs very easy. That doesnt give them much swimming room in a ten gallon though. I think they would prefer more room beeing such and active fish but you could keep 5 in a ten gallon pretty easy.

I say no, not long term.
Gold barbs do get big, 3-4 inches depending on what kind of "gold barb" it is. And like all barbs they do need swimming room, they may not be as active as rosys' or tiger barbs but they do need the room.

I have 7 gold barbs in a 30 gallon tank (around 3ft long)and I'm not happy about it. They are fairly active fish and ideally they would have much more room to swim than I can give them. IMO 10 gallons would be way too small.

I have to agree with Babelfish and Whetu, a ten gallon is too small. As Babel said some Gold Barbs can get fairly large and they need room to comfortably swim around.
I have 3 Gold Barbs in my 20gallon and they're starting to grow pretty big, so i think a ten would be too small.

Yeah, I agree -- they're easygoing and tough fish, but they do eventually get fairly large. I definitely would not try to keep more than 3 in a 10-gallon tank, and I might limit it to 2.
