Today I found my female cherry barb dead I'd had her for a long time so I assume it was old age.

Is my male going to be ok by himself or should I get another female? I do have the space available, would two females be better than one?

Thanks.

Cherry barbs seem pretty flexible to me. I've got a male and 2 albino females currently, and they are all peaceful in my 30. You might even consider a couple of males - more color, and I would bet more activity!

Cherry barbs can adapt to most situations, but they do seem to enjoy company. They are happiest in pairs, so I'd recommend getting another female. Adding two girls might result in one being ignored, because cherry barbs don't school or shoal much. They just like to pair off and do their own thing.

Sorry to hear that your barb died.

I lost my female sometime back now and although the male seems ok he has become very nippy and territorial on his own. He hides under the filter and if any one else comes near he's out there nipping them and chasing them away.

No, males are a bright red color, especially when they're ready to spawn. Female cherry barbs are orangish in color, almost brown.

My male is a very bright red. The females I've had tend to be off-white, tan, and a pale red, almost orange color.

He kept hiding after I removed the female and wouldn't eat. Today I bought a new female and he seems quite happy, so far they've been inseparable
