All that you need to verify for it to be a rainbow shark is whether its fins are red (AT ALL) or if just its tail is red. An RTS will have obviously black/grey fins and a red tail. A rainbow shark will have obviously red fins all the way around (dorsal, etc) along with a red tail. This should be a pretty quick identification to make...

that compatibility list is a little off, they dont do good with bettas and blue gouramis IME

I don't think either one of those links specifies that these fish belong with bettas or gouramis. In fact, it says it may tolerate other fish. Typically, after reviewing a profile, we followup by posting and finding out how many people have kept certain species together. In general, fast moving fish and slow movers, don't go well, tho there are exceptions.

But you didn't answer the question. Which one does it most closely resemble?

Does he look like this:

Rainbow Shark

Or, like this:

RTB Shark

Read the profile on the one you believe it to be, so you can understand its temperment with the other fish in your tank. He definitely will need a bigger tank, and maybe different tank mates.

I had a raimbow shark (3" in a 20 gallon tank with 5 tigar barbs of all verities. He really thought that he owned the tank and picked on the barbs a lot. I finaly got up the nerve to dump him in my 55 gal. with my Convics (male 5", female 3",Pleco 6.5", orange fin loach 4", Synodontis eupterus 3.5", 4 giant danios 2-3.5", and 2 Boesemani Rainbow 2.5-3". At first he really went after the rainbows and danios but after an hour it calmed down and kept to him self. Now a few days later he seems quite happy. There is lots of room for him to swim around and he is leaving everyone alone. My biggest worry was that the Convics were going to mess him but but they down seem to mind him.

My rainbow shark is jet black with red fins Cute little bugger is only about 3 inches right now. He swims around thinking he is a red eyed tetra and never bothers anybody.

he is more gray now, and just 3 days ago i had to put my oscar down and i put my male fish, zebra danios, white clouds, and like half my guppy fry, and now he is much more active, he still sits under his log, but he will sparaticly dart around the tank, and chase other fish from his log, i dont think he likes the color red, or orange though i have a red/orange platty, and he chases him, and i have a male guppy (from my very first batch of babys) who has a bright orange tail, but he hasnt cought them, and now i see him eating algea off the glass i think i am liking this fish more and more i am very happy with him

aren't rainbow sharks more of a gray color and not black? Could it be a redtail black shark?

Those are beautiful fish. I feel like 6 in. is a conservative estimate of how big they get, though. I saw one in a pet store last week that was at least 7 inches. Gorgeous fish, but at that body length, with that bullet shaped body, you can tell it's a fish that likes to swim and needs room to be really happy. I don't know what the minimum tank size for one of those would be, but cheers for rescuing the poor guy anyway

OMG!! i got him!!! boy, they wernt kidding, and it was sooo sad there wasnt anything except the fish covered with algea] it took like 3 hours to soak and scrum like 60-70% of the algea off, i finished setting up the tank today, i filled it with female livebearers, the shark is like 5 INCHES! i felt so bad for him, but boy is he a beautydark black with, like BRIGHT blood red fins, and when he got into that 30 gallon, oh boy if he wasnt thrilled
he swam back and forth, up and down, he zipped in circles as fast as he could go, and now he has settled down, under a log, i have just i question what does he eat? what is best? i took all the fry out, well, maybe like 10 remain, but thats because i couldent catch them but oh well, he is sooooooooooo happy

oh, forgot to add, this is my x-bf's fish i am rescuing from the 10 gallon (poor fishy) and when my oscar gets his 55-90+ tank (55 is a last resort if we cant find anything else, but almost got a 90 gallon, twice)so its not his "forever home" i wouldent put a shark in a 30, if i was to go out a bye 1, i was just wondering because my juvi oscar hasnt touched the fry.....yet, im moving the fry soon anyway, they will miss the 30 when they get the 10, but when they are bigger, a selected few will call it home

I doubt it would eat them, but the possibility is always present. I've never heard of a rainbow shark eating any smaller tankmates and mine's lived with fish as small as neon tetras before without incident...

As for the tank size, he needs at least 40 gallons and caves to make territories either way...

I bet that it would be glad to eat those fry. Rainbow sharks have been known to eat smaller tankmates, and baby fish are the smallest of them all. Also, I don't know if thirty gallons is big enough for a rainbow shark. They are fairly active fish, and reach around six inches in length. In any case, I wouldn't put in that tank, if you want to keep your fry.

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."
