	tiger barba and neon tetras
CanadianJohn Fingerling Posts: 38 Votes: 1 Registered: 24-Jan-2004	quick question, my brother had 1 neon tetra and is shutting his tank down, he dosen't have the time at the moment to dedicate enough time to the tank, all he has is 1 otto cat and 1 neon tetra, I have a 30 gallon with 2 otto cats(and about 3 jars to make those ottot cat rock algee treats) and 10 tiger barbs, i am taking the otto for sure but question is rather than him flush the neon down the toilet could i put in with my barbs or will they kill it, he has tried a few LFS and none will take it.

I've heard that tiger barbs are less nippy when kept in large groups. If that is true, then I'd add the tetra to your tank, then buy five more to go with it. They really need to be kept in schools, the same goes with the tiger barbs you already have. If and when you add the neon tetra, don't forget to acclimate it! And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

Then your tigers may catch what ever it gets, so many nasty things in a tank just waiting for a stressed, sick or weak fish. This is so sad...

Can you give him/her to a LFS? Or even better can you take over the tank and get more neons??? Anyway, I hope it works out for the best for you and the neon.

RossCo20uk Small Fry Posts: 9 Kudos: 16 Votes: 0 Registered: 07-Mar-2004	I`ve kept Neon tetras for years now and have even had a shoal of tiger barbs (about 6) and 10 neons and they were absolutely fine i never had a neon death for what seemed like years and the tiger barbs were fine. Coming from experience i believe the neon and the tiger barbs will be fine together although i think you should get another 5neons to keep the little guy happy

Even if the barbs shred it to pieces, it's still better then being flushed down the toilet. Since it wasn't your fish to begin with, you simple taking it into your tank is above and beyond the call, I would not get more neons to go with it. It's been alone for a good while now (or so it seems) so any damage is done, and putting more neons in your tank is very risky seeing as how they're kept and bred similar to feeder fish which are usually plague ridden. RossCo20uk Small Fry Posts: 9 Kudos: 16 Votes: 0 Registered: 07-Mar-2004	I agree with that last post i think you should put the neon in the tank i`m 99.9% sure that it wont be attacked although i would get it 5 friends to live with as well and as neons are so small they wont make much of an effect on ure stalking levels. I 2 had glo lights neons and tiger barbs and they were GREAT together no probs whatsoever.

If you put neons in after the tigers have been in there for awhile, the barbs will destroy them as they did to my neons awhile back. So if i was you i would find someone else that keeps neons and give it to him.
