algae eaters? | |
puffer_archer Enthusiast Posts: 288 Kudos: 250 Votes: 4 Registered: 20-Jul-2004 | Unfortunately, there really isn't. Best thing is a good algae scrubber, making sure all your water parameters are pristine, and possibly reducing the amount of time the light is on. |

I'm getting quite a bit of green algae - is there such a thing as a brackish algae eater? Last edited by dawlphyn at 06-Nov-2004 00:15 |

Not a spot of algae to be found anywheres in the tank, even with 12-16 hours of light a day. Oh, and they STILL turned into a school of pihrannas at feeding time. |

It has a mouth like a pleco, and a body of a goby. It is brownish tan in color and has greenish stipes on its back and sides. Its eyes are on top of its head. Medium size fish, 1.5-3inch fights for food though Spends most of time in caves and on bottom. It does however suck on glass if algea gets bad. BTW, what kind of tank do you have?(the one you are not temp using?) the fish will run you about 18-25 bucks. Good luck, BG. |

malawianpro Fingerling Posts: 48 Kudos: 29 Votes: 0 Registered: 11-Nov-2004 | there were some snails/crabs i believe in the BW department at LFS. So they are around, can't imagine a swamp not having them in the wild. |

AggieMarine Mega Fish Posts: 1364 Kudos: 229 Votes: 12 Registered: 16-Apr-2002 | There is also the problem of mollies not really liking to eat algae if there is better stuff available. Better stuff being everything else. They'll help a little with control, but they certainly won't help enough to be worthwhile. |

dawlphyn Fingerling Posts: 29 Kudos: 8 Votes: 2 Registered: 02-Oct-2003 | the tank is only a 12 right now, although i have a 33 currently on loan to a friends house, and i have my 75 sw, which i was planning on moving the mono to eventually. If he gets too aggressive i can always get rid of him. Yes, i'm using marine salt. |

puffer_archer Enthusiast Posts: 288 Kudos: 250 Votes: 4 Registered: 20-Jul-2004 | What size tank is it/will it be? Monos get to be very large and can be quite aggressive. I would not recommend putting a figure 8 in with them. The last F8 puffer I saw in with monos was picked on so badly he ended up dying. |

dawlphyn Fingerling Posts: 29 Kudos: 8 Votes: 2 Registered: 02-Oct-2003 | i was wondering about aclimating sw snails.... btw, what should i keep my salinity at for the fish i mentioned? (also considering adding a figure 8 puffer). Right now it's at 1.005, which is what the store i bought the fish had it at. Should i add more salt? Thanks for any suggestions. |

AggieMarine Mega Fish Posts: 1364 Kudos: 229 Votes: 12 Registered: 16-Apr-2002 | Yeah, all flatfishes are strictly carnivores. Mollies eat algae, but not in the quantities to keep it under control. Also, Malay livebearing snails eat algae and can live in brackish water (if you don't beleive me, come over to my house and check out the infestation in my brackish tank), but I'm pretty sure you don't want those either, because they'll run rampant. |
