Yes... Kitten's back. And bearing a new, bigger tank! And that's where the "I need help!" part comes in. *grins*

So there's this tank sitting empty, or rather, it's been left to slowly evaporate. And I've been given leave to take it home with me. So, now I need help.

I can scrub it to within an inch of its life, already gave it a quick wipe down and did away with a nasty dead/dried layer of algae. Dumped out the disgusting water (all 1 or so inches that were left above the substrate) and ditched the thin layer of crushed coral/shell/whatever-the-heck-it-was substrate.

I know that the tank was at one time used to house goldfish during the winter when a pond froze over. Apparently it has also been used for saltie... I'm really not sure, but I have a water test result recording a pH of 8.0 and salinity of 1.018, I think. I don't have it in front of me now. Also stapled to this report and dated with the same date (a good 10 years ago) is a receipt with mention of tangs and damsels. I think the saltie was prior to the goldfish over-wintering, but the crushed shell/coral/whatever and "saltie" decor (fake coral formations and the like) were still in the tank.

My questions are as follows... what should I do in order to make this tank safe for freshwater? I know I'm going to have to do a lot better cleaning job than I did (it was a quick job just to make it halfway clean) and may need a razor blade to scrape off some of the algae. Is there anything specific that I need to know to make this apparently previously-saltie tank freshie-ready?

Everything seems in working order, even the nice canister filter (I think Magnum 350? Does that sound right?). I know the filter is going to stink to high heaven when I open it... is just bleach-watering the whole kit and caboodle going to fix this predicament or is there something more I need to look into?

I don't see any manual for the filter, so I'm going to have to look it up online, but any hints on cleaning it?

(And if anyone is interested, I'm going to go post a quick note over in aquascaping, looking for input on inexpensive, plant-friendly substrates...)

Missed y'all...
Meows and hugs!
