Hello..iam soon getting a 100L tank and i would like to stock it with these fish: silver dollar, barbs, sharks and ottos. What kind of barbs and sharks would you buy? how many should i buy...dont want to overstock
Or the second stocking would be cichlids with a pleco or ottos..what cichlids should be best for this 100L tank?
Robby

Hey Robby
well 100 litres is around 26gallons.

So in my opinion any of these Barbs would be fine.

- Tiger Barb
- Dwarf Barb
- Chequer Barb
- Cherry Barb
- five-banded Barb
- Golden dwarf Barb
- Ember, or "Melon" Barb
And im sure there is more.

But when it comes to the Sharks and Silver Dollar idea I do belive that your tank would be to small to keep them as they grow quite large.

The Cichlids you would be able to keep are
-Bolivian Rams
-Blue, or "German" Rams
-Apistos, eg Agassiz's, Cockatoo's and any other dwarf cichlid.

With the pleco buy a Bristlenose as they grow smaller compared to the common pleco.
And the ottos would be fine in either setup.

With the stocking use the 1in (2.5cm) body length of fish per every 12sq.in (75sq.cm) method.

I hope this answers the question you posted.

Yeah, your tank is too small for any of those fish.
You would need at least a 55g, or 220 Litres.
If you want ottos, you could have 2-3 ottos in a 100L tank, or a bristlenose pleco. You cannot have Bala Sharks, Silver Dollars, or Tinfoil Barbs. All of those fish will outgrow your tank in just a couple of months. Bala Sharks average around 10-12 inches, Tinfoil Barbs are around 12-14 inches, and Silver Dollars easily reach an 8 inch diameter. If you like the speediness of the barbs and sharks, you could opt for some smaller cyprinids, such as white cloud mountain minnows, dwarf rainbowfish, giant danios, pearl danios, leopard danios, zebra danios. These are all fast streamlined fish. You could probably put in a true Siamese Algae Eater instead of a pleco or ottos, and that would be fine, or you could opt for Coreys, Yoyo Loaches, or Apple Snails.
Some other smaller fish you might want to check out are all the barbs that were listed, and also, Glowlight Tetras, Rummynose Tetras, Pristella Tetras, Lemon Tetras, Silvertip tetras, Cochus Blue Tetras, Emperor Tetras, Pencilfish. These are all nice fish suited to a smaller tank. !
Good luck!

I agree totally, the silver dollars and any sharks will outgrow your tank. If you wanted cichlids, and a pleco, I'd just go with a pair of any dwarf cichlid, and a bristlenose pleco, unless you had something else in mind. You would also have room in there for a school of fish, since you wanted barbs, I'll suggest some gold barbs. They're very peaceful, good schoolers, and colorful, too.

Thanks for your reply.
I think i will go for this:
1) 6-8 cherry barbs
2) 6-8 5-banded barbs
3) 2-3 ottos or 2 dwarf corydoras

or i will go for the 2nd stocking:
1) 2-4 bolivian rams
2) 2 blue rams
3) 1 bristlenose

One more thing,
That second stocking option may have a bit too many Rams in it. Rams are peacefull fish but the males can get aggressive towards each other if there is'nt enough space in the aquarium.
Best bet would be to have a single pair (male and Female) of only one type, Blue or Bolivian.
Then you can have your ottos or your Bristlenose and then maybe have a school of tetras like cardinals. Or if not tetras a school of cories.

Your first option list is very nice, I have a tank stocked almost exactly like that.

As far as the rams, I keep 4 German males in one tank, and three unsexed Bolivians in another. Other than some chasing I've never seen any angression amongst themselves.

I think I'd still go with only two for you tank, and a school of something else...harlequin rasboras would be a nice choice. Rams are good looking fish, I like them a lot, but I think the tank would seem like it was missing something with just rams and a BN.

Good luck and keep us posted

Hi..thank you all for the suggestions
so here is my final option then
1) 6-8 Cherry barbs
2) 6-8 5-banded barbs
3) 4-8 Black neons( if i can have them..dont want to overstock)
4)and for a bottom feeder i have 4 choices..but what to choose i like them all...lets see..Dwarf corydoras,ottos,Bn and emerald catfish.
i like the emerald catfish..lets say 2 of them.Hmm i never thought it was so difficult to choose...maybe i will go for a bigger tank..150-200 liters..so i can have those rams that i like

If you choose any cories or the emerald cats, you should have six of them. They fare much better in shoals of six or more, and are much happier and less stressed that way. I would choose either the bristlenose, or six dwarf cories. The emerald catfish get fairly large, and six of them would overstock your tank.
