I just completed my first fishless cycle. I have changed most of the water, and it is pumping away through the tank. I was under the impression it should run about 24 hours before adding fish. But now I am second guessing myself and wondering if my hard-earned bacteria will starve without food for that long.

I can't get the fish any sooner, but I could add another small dose of ammonia.

Any suggestions?

thanks,
-Dennis

I don't think your bacteria would all die off after one day. You should be ok.

I also do fishless cycling as well. This is how I do it;

1) Plant the devil out of it. Using fast growing, hardy plants (Hygro, Water Sprite, Wisteria) to start things off
2) Let'em grow for about 1 week
3) After a week, do my first water change
4) Starting adding the fish

Plants help with the process. Also, there are beneficial for the tank for outcompeting Algae.

What if you plan on a cichlid tank with no plants? Is the fishless cycle less effective?

It will still work, a cycle is a cycle.

This tank does NOT have plants. So that plan is out.

I didn't really think it would ALL die, I guess I was curious if it would actually be BETTER to add a little ammonia, because it's REALLY easy, but I don't want to screw anything up.

If the tank is cycled, adding a little more ammonia should do nothing bad at all.
