Hello, I've been reading (lurking) for a while now, but this is my first post, here goes.
I've had a 110 gal set up for a while now and my fish are getting too big (too many) so I bought a 300 gal (96x24x31)
Here is my list of current fish going in
1 8" oscar
2 7" oscars
4 severums (2 4", 2 6"
3 5" tin foil barbs
1 8" com pleco
1 5" jellybean
2 5" botias
2 4" four line catfish
1 6" pacu (a gift from my girlfriend)
I got all these guys when they were tiny, they get along great but they are over crowded, hence the 300 gal.
My plan is to buy a 18" golden african knife and 20" silver arrowana that my lfs has living with several oscars and severums to complete my tank. Any thoughts from those of you who have kept similar set-ups?
Thanks, Kevin

The Arrowana and Pacu I believe will get too big. The Knifefish should be ok. Arrowana can get to 4ft+ that, therefore meaning, a really big tank. Shinigami will probably comne along soon with all the facts as he knows most things (not calling him big headed but he does). As for that I think it should be fine.

P.S. I hope Shinigami is male as I have been calling him male all the way through.

P.P.S. Welcome to the site

Just to add a little information, the filter system is an over sized wet/dry with a 3000 gph pump. It's set up like a reef tank with overflows that have holes at the top, middle and bottom. I was thinking of adding one more bottom cat to help clean up the mess from the oscars. Any ideas on an interesting type?
As far as the Pacu, my lfs said she would take him back as a trade in if he got too big, which I would do if he gets over two feet. I was hoping he would'nt as I think it's rare for them to get that big in captivity.
But what do I know? Thats why I'm asking the people who have kept them and are not just selling them.
Thanks alot, Kevin

p.s. Is there a giant "cory" type cat? That would be perfect.

Your tank will be at its limit with what you have now. NO Arowana, they need a 300g tank to themselves.

They have giant cories at the Henry Doorley Zoo in Omaha, NE...they're about 2' long each...i doubt they're cories tho, but they look exactly like them

Yep, a silver arowanna would be fine alone in a 300g tank, but not with a bunch of other fish...

Maybe some channel catfish as bottomfeeders?

Those Black Doradids (the described "giant cory" definitely will outgrow the 300 gallon as they get 3' long too. Arowanas may be all right in this tank, but not the Pacus. It's definitely rare to see them in captivity at a big size because they either die at the hands of the newb aquarist or are released into the wild by those who don't want to care for them anymore.

The suggested Channel Catfish will outgrow this tank, not to mention eat any fish small enough.

It will depend on what species of Knifefish you are getting if it will be good... The "African Knifefish" Xenomystus nigri does not even get 18" long, so I assume you are speaking of one of it's relatives. Most other species of Knifefish from Africa grow enormous and may not be a good idea since, like the Channel Catfish, would also eat anything small enough.

Thanks for all the info. The Knife is the gold colored type thats supposed to get 24" to 36". I think I'll trade my Pacu in on a 6" black "Hoplo" cat I was looking at the other day.
The arrowana and knife are trained to take krill/shrimp and are not being fed live food, I hope that makes it easier as I really want to try this combo.
I'm still doing research as to the best plan and I'm open to your "expert" opinions, Thanks guys.
