I have a 30 gal. running its fishless cycle right now. the only thing that I am pretty sure I want are kuhli loaches. I think I want a schooling fish as well, but I haven't really been able to decide on anything other than the kuhlis. Do you have any good ideas? thanks for your help.

Well, what was it that attracted you to kuhlis? that should give us a better idea of what would suit you

There are always tetras, maybe cardinals or glolites?
Livebearers? Platies or maybe swords?
Danios?
Barbs?

For animals, the entire universe has been neatly divided into things to (a) mate with, (b) eat, (c) run away from, and (d) rocks. - Terry Pratchett

I just thought that kuhlis look different and cool. I would probably lean away from livebearers only because I dont really have a way to deal with the fry. Glolight tetras look pretty cool do they school very tightly?

For tight schoolers, I'd check out rummynose tetras if I were you. Their schools are probably the tightest I know of, especially in fairly large groups...

PM/email/msg me if you have any questions/comments regarding me or my knowledge or if you want me to read a thread.

I think a nice school of either pearl danios or cherry barbs would look nice.

The above ideas are good and I really like kuhli loaches too

If you can find them belted barbs are great schoolers with very nice color. I've had all sorts of tetras and none have schooled as well as these fish.

Harlequins are also supposed to be good schoolers.

You could have a nice sized school of one fish, a group of kuhlis, a pair of cherry barbs for a bit of red color, perhaps a BN or other small plec for algae, and perhaps some sort of gourami as a centerpiece fish.[/font]

If you wanted to go with kind of a southeast Asia theme, you could get a school of harlequin rasboras: they school quite nicely. Add some cherry barbs and you have a nice Asian themed tank.

Gold barbs, Gold barbs Gold barbs .

A 30 gallon really isnt' all that big, and doesnt' offer the space needed for larger schooling fish, even something as "small" as a rosy barb. I've never really been a fan of tetras since IME they dont' really do much of anything....gold barbs are brightly colorec, schooling, stay on the small side, and cute as anything .

Lets not forget a school of corys for the bottom .

^_^

hmm the belted barbs do look cool, but all of my searches for them didnt yeild a whole lot. Also the barbs in the pic that you posted are way more brightly colored than any of the ones I saw online.

I'll second the rummy-noses for schooling. A large group of them looks amazing!

could I fit another school of small tetras or rasboras in there with the rummy noses and kuhlis?
