Hi All

I'd like to know what you think about my proposed stocking list. As decoration I have a nice piece of Malaysian Driftwood and fake plants. The substrate is a riverbed look of small, rounded pebbles.

3 Zebra Danios
5 Red eyed Tetras
7 Harlequin Rasboras or 10 Neon Tetras
2 Bolivian Rams
4 Albino Cory's

Thanks for your comments

Danios can be nippy if kept in small groups, so if you definitely want them I'd increase the size that group.

Maybe choose one type of tetra, and have a large school of those along with the harlequins.

It will probably also be suggested that you try for a larger number of cories.

Thanks for your comments Blazeybird and Theresa. I'll increase my Albino Cory's to 6 and as far as my danios I really don't have much of a choice with them as they are my original cycling fish and I don't want to get rid of them. Could I maybe add around 6 Silver Hatchet fish to fill out the surface area? Or would I be pushing the stocking limit? I do have very good filtration, an AquaClear 300 HOB.

So what all do you plan to have in the tank...having all the fish mentioned in the original post plus the hatchets won't work. I would go with Theresa's advice, choose one type of tetra and the harlies. I think with that being a tall tank, the surface area isn't big enough for more than 2 schools of fish. If you don't want the danios to be one of the schools (and filling them out to atleast 6, where they should be) then I would try to take them to the LFS or give them to someone else. If you want hatchets, then they should be one of the 2 schools. Taller tanks don't have the surface area for the number of schools you want...certainly not 4 schools of fish.

I think you could, cause that is about a 29gall stocking leval

A 29g isn't big enough for 4 schools of fish...sorry.

well not normally, but if you used small fish, such as,
panda corys (or ottos)
neons
harlquins
danios
that would work, as pandas are only 1 1/2
then neons and harlaquins and danios are only about 2 so that would be
27 inches of fish....not that bad but it would be a close one but maybe you are right,.... hmmmm thats a tricky one, maybe you are right.

Panda cories get 2 inches long. The inch per gallon rule isn't very good. It works for some fish and some tanks, but her tank is tall...meaning there isn't alot of swimming room from side to side (the way fish swim). That tank is perfect for a single angel and 2 schools of fish. If the tank was a regular long tank, 3 schools may be ok, if the fish were small, but its not long.

Thanks for all your suggestions. Much appreciated. Here's my list now:

8 red eyed tetras
2 bolivian rams
6 albino cories

How does that sound?

Sounds good! If the red eyes are the only school you want, you could up the number to 10 or 12.

I love albino cories! I have 4 small ones that will be going into my new 55g. I hope to get 4 more! You'll love them.

Hi GirlieGirl

I'm just a little confused here
If the red eyes are the only school you want, you could up the number to 10 or 12

I was counting the cories as a school too. If they aren't considered as such, does this mean that along with my tetras and cories, I can actually have a school of rasboras or hatchet fish????

Cories are actually shoaling, meaning they like the company of their own kind, but don't always swim together. I really meant schools of tetras/rasboras...sorry, i didn't make myself clear.

How long is the tank? Well, really what are the dimensions?

I think you could have 2 schools (not counting the cories). Since the tank is tall, I suggest going with the hatchets. I read on the the red eyes profile that they may harrass other fish and should be kept in higher numbers (8+). So make sure you get atleast 8. They also get a little bigger (almost 3 inches!). I would get some feedback on the red eyes to make sure they won't harass the rams or hatchets (if you choose them).

Hatchets are cool little fish. I have always wanted them, but haven't had a tank to put them in yet...maybe my new 55g. They seem like great fish.

I have a hex tank at about 24" wide and 22" tall. I think my red eyes should be OK with the rams and the hatchets as long as I increase their numbers as you suggested but I'll definitely check into that further.

Thanks so much for claryfing this for me Girliegirl. I can't wait to go to my LFS and start getting my new little friends. You've made my day

Good luck on your 55G
