well they all get to be the same size... i would say a pair of angels would be good, sometimes if theres an odd number they will constantly harass the odd man out

not bad i dont think, but i would probably cut down on the bottom feeders, either cut the corys or just keep 1 of the catfish. rams are mid to bottom dwellers so you probably dont wanna crowd the bottom too much.

here is a theory i came up with when i was wasted. read it if you feel like laughing. ok it might not even be funny. but it makes perfect sense. i think. i think it might be genius. i dont know i will read it again tomorow and see if it makes sense.

tanks are like 3 story buldings. floor 1 for the bottom dwellers, floor 2 for the mid dwellers and floor 3 for the top dwellers. some fish will only stay on certain floors and some fish will wander around between 2 or maybe all 3. regardless of how big the building is, you can populate it with the right capacity, but if everyone wants to hang out on the top floor or everyone wants to hang out at the bottom floor, then the population obviously isnt evenely distributed and stuff. which would mean you cant keep as many in there. my point is you can keep the maximum amount of fish (space wise anyhow) if you keep an even distribution between top, mid, and bottom dwellers.

what you've got there seems to be a little bottom heavy, just might wanna even it out i think

Pictus or upside downs. Both are cool. I would only have one small shoal of either. I think having both would cause fighting. Personally im not a cory fan, so i would have 4-5 of either cat fish and no corys. But its your tank, so in the end you have to go with what you like the best, and what will fit in your tank.

i strongly reconment not having pictus, there are really hyper, prefer schools, and some species of them can get like 8'' oh and they'll glady tank care of the cardinals. plus USD synos rock

4 angelfish
4 rams
10 cardinal tetras
6 hatchets
6 corys
1 pictus cat
3 upside down cats
This is what you want:
I vote 4 Angels
4 Rams -which kind are you gonna get, Bolivians or Blues?
10 Cardinal Tetras
10 Hatchets
4 Upside Down Cats
That would look great. The pictus will eventually eat your cardinals, so I wouldnt go for one of them. A 42g is a little small for a shoal of pictus anyway.
Besides Upside Down Cats are awesome!!!!
Maybe you could even get them to breed.
I would choose more of them over corys as well,
or perhaps some type of smaller loach- Queen Botia, Tiger Botia, Horseface Botia, etc.
Also, Maybe in the future consider an algae eater of some type: A Farlowella Catfish would be good, or a Bristlenose Pleco.

I still think the pictus should be scratched from the tank....mostly from the size of the tank. Lets face it, they're active and schooling fish, they wouln't be very comfortable in that tank....just think 3 hyper 4 year olds in the back seat on a 5 day car trip .

Cories have tons of character and personality, and they are my favorite catfish. I'd recommend a shoal of eight to ten cories in a tank that size.
I'd just dump the pictus cats, and go with just the cories. You could probably add an upside down catfish, but there's no need unless you really want one.
