I am trying to decide the final residents for my new 55 gallon tank.
Currently I have 6 long fin zebra danios, 2 SAE, 2 emerald cory cats (will increase to 6)
The tank is planted. I am running two HOB's filter, a whisper 60, and emperor bio-wheel 85.
Ph generally between 7.5 to 8.
On the cory cats should they all be the same or does mixing the types also work, I thought it would be interesting to mix them.
I am think of a school of praecox rainbows but am not really sure?
any suggestion would be appreciated.

Hi there,
the cory cats should all be the same species.

Praecox rainbows would look great in there.
A group of 8-10 would look excellent.

Sounds like a very nice tank, pics would be great .

Corys should be kept in schools of their own species like sneaky mentioned. However if you do happen to end up with a random one (say you have to do a rescue) the other corys won't be agressive towards a loner. In fact different corys will get along just fine with each other, but as they are schooling fish it is best in most keepers opinions to keep the fish as happy as possible and keep them in schools of 6-8 as a minimum.

I figure you also know to increase the fish stock slowly and not add the corys and the rainbows at the same time .

yes just slowly increasing the stock, added two more corys today. Have trouble finding lfs with a selection of rainbows, particularly the praecox.
Treated them to some frozen brine shrimp today. The danios ate their fair share shall we say, but the corys did get some.

Danios will
A trick you can try is to attempt distraction with some flakes then feed the corys the shrimp right away. The Danios will find the shrimp soon enough but the corys'll get a few more bites .

With the LFS trouble, are you just looking in chain stores, or have you tried looking for fish stores in the phone book. I found quite a few in the DC area that I'd have had no idea about without the phone book. Of course I knew about one of the stores because they actually advertiesed on tv !

I have been to several stores looking around, it has been fun. THe SAE's came from a non chain store, that store has a good selection but not to many rainbows. But there are still several stores further out I have yet to search.
thanks for the tip on distracting the danios.

Have you asked any of the LFS if they will special order? Many will.

I found a store today with the praecox rainbow, but I am not to sure of the store. It smells bad, all the tanks are way way overcrowded and full of algae. Not to mention the number of dead fish in the tanks.
Think I will keep on looking.

The dwarf gourami is common in many of the LFS here. I have read online that they are not necesarliy the best community fish though. Any thoughts? or experiences?
I do like the look of these guys.

finally I have found the neon rainbows, in great condition, have added three today. The new kids on the block have stirred the others in the tank, there is plenty of action now.
