I was planning to clear out my 55 gallon tank and was wondering what some of your stocking ideas were? The lists I was thinking of were:
1) 6 to 8 oscars just to pair off in.
2) One or two solitary predators. ( I know solitary means alone lol )
3) Discus and neon tetras.
4) Yellow labs and Auratus.

I don't know if you know, but even two oscars wont fit in a 55 gallon for too long
Plus, they grow fast

I think that the bioload from eight juvenile Oscars might be too much for a 55 to handle, so I wouldn't go there. You could do Malawis in your 55 but be aware that the Auratus might claim up to half of the tank for his own. I'd say go with the Yellow and possibly Socofoli instead of Auratus. Go with lots of rocks/caves and either a crushed coral or sand substrate and you'll be set.

auratus and yellow labs may be a bad idea too because the auratus is very aggresive compared to the labs and will probably wreak havoc on them. i have heard stories about one claiming half a 55 to it self and the females are almost as aggresive as the males.

discus and rams with a small schoal of tetra's sounds nice. though 55 is not a great deal of space for discus because they require about 10 gallons per fish.

Three discus, a pair of bolivian rams, and a small school of cardinal tetras sounds like a great setup. Though the discus would be a stretch, it's better to have three discus than two. Usually, one discus becomes dominant, and picks on the other one/s. The more discus you have, the more any aggression becomes spread out. The rams shouldn't bother any of the fish, and the tetras will mostly do their own thing.
That setup would look very beautiful, and have fish from the same areas. Also, they all like soft, acidic water.

[font color="#000080"]I think having discus, rams and a school of cardinals would be a real nice setup.

the oscar idea should work with a few conditions. they usually pair off at ~6" and at this size it would be extremely important to remove the extra 4 simply for the sake of the bioload. Also, you'll have to have excellent filtration while they're growing up in a 55. I'd look for 12-15x per hour turnover. Also, make sure that 120 is ready by the time the oscars get to ~8" because that's about when they'll be ready for a bigger tank.

A couple other suggestions:

--2 pairs of firemouths, 1 school of a larger cory species, 8 platys and 2 bristlenose
--Pair of Salvini
--1 salvini, 1 senegal bichir, and 1 catfish with max. adult size of 8"

A pair of Jack Dempseys would probably be ok, but they grow rather large. Males can reach from 10-12" which would make him a little cramped at full size in a 55 gallon. I'd prefer to go with something that won't exceed 8". The only exception I've made is for the bichir. They can grow to 13" long but usually stay smaller. They are highly predatory fish but are not usually aggressive.
