I was planning to get a African Butterfly Fish for my 20 gallon and I was wondering what could its possible tankmates?

Since they don't like competition on the surface, and will sometimes eat smaller fish, your options are limited.
You should be able to keep a shoal of cories with them, or a small pleco. Also, dwarf cichlids would be all right. I wouldn't suggest tetras, because there is a chance that they would be eaten.

IME, they tend to be shy to most non bite sized surface dwellers. Most non overly aggressive/nippy/small fish will work.

i have kept these guys off and on for almost 15 years. a floating plant area combined with minimal water works best. keep in mind they are 100% top water feeders- small fish that stray to the top of the tank (fry, neons, wcms, etc.) will be eaten.

cup of life noodles is correct- keep in mind its feeding and living requirements and stick from there. you have lots of options.
