Hello everyone !

I had the day off so hit a fishstore and stumbled onto a zebra oto

It was the only one left but I was quite happy to 'rescue' it, and now my couple regular otos have a new buddy. It appeared very healthy and lively, even so I'm drip acclimating it to help it's chances, and keeping the light off tonight to minimize stress. That store only sees them a couple times per year so I was very lucky to find even one.

Also came home with 4 beckford's pencilfish, as the rams on their own aren't very active in the tank and I hear they make great dither fish. The L dorsigeras maybe going back in there too, but I'll let the new fish acclimate first.

Tank update, I'm quite content with the existing fish/plant species that I have. I'd add more zebra otos and some bn plecos if the opportunity strikes. Algae is bad atm so focusing on that.

Here's hoping the new additions do well.

How about you guys ? Updates ? How is your fish/tanks/plants. Anything new ? Anything breeding ?

Hi Hokese

Good to hear your cichlids are still breeding
What are you feeding your fry ?

I hear you on tank space. I went to more fishstores just window shopping, saw some gold rams, also some keyholes (look more authentic then the pair I had) I was so tempted but did not get them.

The true test of character is not how much we know how to do, but how we behave when we dont know what to do.

Thanks Sora

Otocinclus (Otos) are small algae-eating catfishes from South America that eat some soft green algaes. Max growth size is 1 to 1.5 inches and are peaceful. There are a handful of species, with the zebra strain having the most distintive markings of the bunch. Before I knew what they were called I used to call them tiger otos. Regular strains of Otos are about $2.00 , zebras start at about $16. They are not very common, the store where I found mine said they only get them about twice a year.

More info for you & hope you enjoy, mind you the pic in the link does not do it justice.

So far mine is settling in ok, I think it will be a long while before I can locate more in my area.

yeah tank space is a battle that i just constantly lose,i cant wait to move!at the moment im just feeding the fry(when i decide to keep them)liqiud fry food, crushed up flakes, whatever really, mum and dad do most of the work for the first few weeks,i like watching them take a mouth full of food back to the fry and then they spit it all out into the batch, then the fry go nuts.both my gts and my bas are really good parents.when i do keep the fry, they make my job alot easyer.but yeah im always at my local fish store window shopping aswell.last time i was up there,i was eyeing of a pair of jags,so i dwelled on it for a few days, then came to my senses and passed them up,i just coundnt house a jag pair propperly where im livingalso on another breeding note,my male salvini has finally won the love of the female gt,they spawned about 4 days ago,and jeewiz are they gaurding there fry....but im not keeping these fry...hybrids,plus nowhere to raise them ether..but thats about it for me.

Sorry for the delay Hokese things been nuts with the Christmas Holiday. Hope you had a good one

I hear you on the tank space. I tried liquifry and microworms when my rams had fry. I was trying to get it in their direction using an oral doser with airhose but the parents freaked. If there's a next time I'll shut off the filter, keep further away and just get it to drop down and hope the parents bring their meal to them

Not sure if I'll get the tank & fish back into breeding condition but I may need to borrow some of your tankwater lol.

Hi Shinigami, hope you had a great Christmas

I will charge up the camera tonight and try to get a decent pic to share. (as decent as I can with a 2mp, 3 opt zoom) Zebra seems to have taken well to his new home. Wish I could find more of them.
