Hi all,
My sister has been having some difficulties with her tank, and has had some murdered fish, including her prize blue ram. I suspect her kribensis is the culprit.
She has decided to remove all fish and start over.
Here is what she has decided: 1 African Butterfly Fish.
She would like to have 3 Pictus Cats as well.
Would the pictus be compatible with the butterfly fish?
If not, suggest some tank mates that would be.

Big question: what size is the tank?

Be very careful if you get the pictus catfish. When you take it out or handle it with a net it often gets its fins caught on it.

Pictus Cats grow to nearly a foot long and need a minimum of 75 gallons. They have a mouth sometimes more than 2" diameter, and will glady eat anything 1.5" and under. Not good community fish.

Everywhere I have read, I have not heard them growing a foot long, only half a foot. Still, many show aggression as they get older. As TheGoldenDojo said, they will eat smaller fish.

Maybe look into some loaches or other bottom feeders? I wouldn't trust a butterfly fish with any top dwellers...

There wont be any top dwellers.
All she wants in the tank period is an african butterfly fish for the top and something to inhabit the bottom. She really likes pictus catfish. Perhaps there are some other suggestions for a bottom fish for her.
She doesnt want corys.

I suggest a Four Line Pictus catfish, they do not grow as large as regular pictus.. Full expected size is 6 inches. I'll add here that everytime I owned regular pictus catfish, I had extremely bad luck with them.. The Four line pictus seems alot hardier and no probs so far...

Hmmm, profile here and at Plant Catfish both put the max length at just over 4" for a pictus.

Otherwise, if she doesn't want cories I'd look into loaches for the bottom. For a 33g there are a number of options, especially since loaches don't have to be in large schools just small groups of their own kind.

Well she has decided this is a setup she will try later down the road. She has decided to make her 33g "Motel 6" for guppies!
