I'm stuck home with a bad bout of asthma. I'm going to start the transition as I always do, by removing some water from the 10 gallon daily and replacing with water from the 20. This will get him use to the "tastes" and "smells", in addition to other subtle things that may gradually acclimitize him. He's definitely not a danio. I'll need to get more pics of him while he is in isolation as it will be more difficult once he gets into the 20. There is definitely cover . I've allowed my banana plants to sprout their surface leaves . I'll shift the light over some so that part of the tank is a little darker too and I will transfer him in the evening when I can shut the tank light ahead of schedule and keep it off into the night. I hope he'll attempt to school with some of my other fish. It will be strange for him. He has never, ever been around another fish since he hatched. I have a strange belief that gradually adding that 20 long water to the 10 gallon will help him to gradually get accustomed to any pathogens to which the other fish have long been use to. |

What you see is what I see, at any angle. Did you compare that link to my pic. It's stunningly similar, if not coincidental. Last edited by Cory_Di at 10-Jan-2005 21:46 |
Filoviridae![]() Fingerling Posts: 22 Votes: 0 Registered: 19-Aug-2004 ![]() | He looks like a very young Melanotaenia lacustris. He looks very much like mine were when they were juvinals. The fact that he goes from blue to gold (my understanding from the photos-maybe I misinterpreted?) depends my suspicions. Melanotaenia lacustris are known for undergoing such color changes in the blink of an eye. I can literally watch my adults "ripple" their color. |

Have a look. It doesn't look right with the coloring on the edge of the fins tho, but close. This one shocked me when I looked at it at full size. I cropped this one as well so the detail could be seen. Any ideas? Does it still look like a turquoise, or is that out the window now? I cropped it to just him and will make a second post of the full pic so you can see his size, relative to a thermometer in the seen. I haven't figured out how to em I can't seem to snap the blue hue no matter what angle. Maybe that was a temporary fluke. This is truly what he looks like now. That pic is from about a month ago. I just have to try to get another pic. I have to charge the batteries. His coloring hasn't changed much from what I can tell. But the irridescence he shows under lighting is just too cool. It almost looks like a sea green alternating with blue - so I guess that is turquoise. It is strange that if I take the pic from different angles he looks different colors. I can't remember, but if he is a turquoise, how big will it get and how long does it take to achieve full size. His growth may slow abit in the 20 because he'll not only have to compete for food, but I only feed that tank twice daily. I've been feeding him in that 10 gallon around 5+ times daily. He gets Hikari Micro Pellets at least twice, Hikari F/D Brine Shrimp, Bloodworms, and Daphnia at night to make sure he is regular .Last edited by Cory_Di at 05-Jan-2005 14:07 |

The l'il tike was less than 1/4 inch when I first put him into a 10 gallon with hornwort and java moss a few months back. He is now just over 2 inches and very healthy. I don't have any recent pics, other than the one in my avatar that was taken about a month ago. I'll try to get another pic, but he or she is still growing, albeit slower now. He is all alone in that 10 gallon, and despite the lack of tankmates, he is quite healthy and active (loves feeding time). I had planned to take him to an lfs when it was certain what he was and when he was big enough. I've been contemplating the thought of putting him in my 20 long to continue growing. I thought it would give him more space to stretch out, and to get use to other fish. But will my tank mates be scared or harmed by him, or vice versa? Vote, but please give me some perspective if you have rainbow experience. In the 20 long are white clouds, rasboras, cories - including tiny habrosus (1/2 inch), otos and 2 male guppies - 1 endler sized. If he is a larger variety my concern is that he may prey on something. ![]() Last edited by Cory_Di at 09-Jan-2005 22:25 |

He would definetly appreciate the room to swim and grow, and you will probably see his growth rate improve as well! With the light issue, perhaps try putting a nice clump of floaty plants for him to hide under until he gets used to the tank light. If you already have floaty plants, just give him time to accomodate to the light- it probably is a prey /shadow/ light type issue, and he will grow used to the light with gradual acclimation to it. I cant wait to see a new pic of the little beauty! Please share when you can! Come Play Yahtzee With Me! http://games.atari.com Http://www.myleague.com/yahtgames |

They love room to swim. Don't worry about the other fish. Even large rainbowfish have small throats making it hard for them to feed on other fish no matter how small. The other issue is probably due to being alone. Rainbows are basically surface fish(although they do spend a lot of time in midwater as well). All of mine rush to the surface for food, sometimes even breaking the surface and splashing water on the floor. I'd bet the little guy doesn't feel %100 comfortable without friends and is just being a little cautious when the lights are on. |

I have plans to move this spring or summer *crosses fingers*. If that happens, my community fish would enjoy life in a fully planted 125g. I would then search out more like him and make a school. When you raise a single fish, that beat the odds (you should have seen the dead frog tank he came from), there is an attachment. One wierd problem I should note is that when I have a lamp on nearby, or just a room light, he feeds readily from the surface. But when I turn on the tank light, he hi-tails it to midwater and either doesn't see surface food or won't eat. I don't know if this is a fear issue (maybe he might be seen by a bird predator), or just a quirk. Last edited by Cory_Di at 04-Jan-2005 21:25 |

Should work out fine. I orginially had two but one died and I haven't replaced it yet. The single one seems to be fine by himself, occasionaly witll catch him schooling with the lemons or the rasboros. |
