I have a friend who is wanting to get rid of her 2 year old 30 gallon aquarium with stand and all supplies. Of course I can't bear the thought of turning down the offer of another tank for my collection.

The problem is that she still has two live fish in the tank. One is a tetra so it can easily be moved to one of my other tanks. However, the other fish is a 14-inch algae eater. Everything I've read about this fish tells me this is a bad choice for a tank (large, can turn aggressive, etc.). So I'm at a dilemma as to what to do with this big guy.

Would it be possible to release him in a pond or would that be too cold for him? Any suggestions?

Some fish store may take him for free, but I would work with reputable fish stores. They probably get many calls from people who get the fish before they realize how big they can get.

Consider our classifieds here too, by advertise your state in the heading.

Donate it to a lfs, or trade it for store credit.

I managed to re-home three of these guys for friends by advertising on clasified boards and also by placing ads in stores.

Return it to a "reputable" FS known for larger fish. I did the same in the past and the very next day - it was sold to a good home.

Good luck.

I must add, as a wildlife major...

NEVER release pets into the wild. If they survive, you can make a catastrophic impact on the native fish populations. I may cite pike cichlids, which are currently a major concern for fisheries. There are many fish species that this is an issue for. Never release pet fish into the wild. Non-native species are probably the #1 reason for freshwater fish species extinctions. It is VERY serious.

Perhaps I didn't make my suggestion of a "release" clear. I was speaking in terms of a maintained backyard pond that a neighbor might keep.
