We have a constant battle with this too. I found the best thing for my tanks is to scrub the sides (we use a wand type thing with a pad on the end), and I have to take the plants out (plastic of course) and soak them in hot water for several hours. Then let them totally dry out. Seems to keep the green goop off them for awhile. In the larger tank I have to use algae destroyer before I scrub.

What size tank is it? What is in the tank (anything besides the betta)?
Is the algae green spots or more fuzzy like? Is it hard to remove with your hand if its fuzzy?

A little more info will help.

Do any good alge eaters mix with a pretty aggresive betta because i have 1oto in my 10 gallon and i never had a alge problem.

If its green spots...that is usually a sign of good water quality. It is a pain to get rid of though. Manually, if the tank is glass, you can scrape it off with a razor blade.
An otto will eat green spot algae (i am pretty sure), but I am not sure if it is alright to put one in a 5g.

Any thoughts from anyone else?

For an otto the space isnt the issue , but the water quality in a tank that small probably would be, in addition they tend to do better in small ,loose groups despite not being a schooling fish. Ottos kept in 1's and 2 's often wane and die. Theyre probably better off in a 20 gal plus in groups of 5 or more, unless you deal with water quality with some awesome skills. In a 5 gal its also probable youd run out of algae too, unless the water quality was excessively bad, so youd have to give the ottos some supplementary feeding, pet rocks etc. Sounds like ottos in a really small tank could go horribly wrong.

This is where some bright spark usually chirps up " ive managed it , ive managed it". lol.

Personally I think its better to exceed the minimum requirements , not tempt fate by having your fish living on the edge.Conversely you could try to grow a few plants even in a 5 gallon, you can certainly get some very low growing and tiny species that could at least carpet the floor of the tank. That might actually reduce the algae.
