What are the advantages and disadvantages to loaches, cories, and barbs? What are the main differences between loaches and cories? Dont loaches and cories usually stay to the bottoM?

Tiger Barbs (had 2 beat tim), either that or you could get some loaches of some sorts or get a school of 6+ cories

I am going to get rid of the knight gobys. Now what is a good schooling fish that is on the tougher side? Or should i get rid of the female paradise fish, maybe calm the male, and get a school of danios.

if you were going to keep knight gobys in seperate tanks the both need their territory and they tend to split up the tank in half

I have to agree with cory, they are extremely agressive, and especially if there are females with them, and they want to breed. The black ones are a little less agressive, but are still agressive as well.

are you certain that it was the paradise fish that killed the danios? I haven't heard of them being that aggressive before but you really never know with anabantids.

Are you kidding? 90% of paradise fish are little bastards in community tanks.

At my LFS, when/if we stock them, we give them their own tank.

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

when I had my 20gallon, my paradise fish was in there w/ both Danios's & cherry barbs & he didn't bother either. I think mines is mellowed for some reason though as he has none of the aggressive traits that paradise fish are supposed to have.

By all means marry; if you get a good wife, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.

Ok well then i dont need any more fish for the lower level of my tank, since the rams are always down there. Can you think of any other fish (maybe not a schooling fish) that would be active in the tank.

most likely it was the paradise fish, they are practically have the same attitude as betta fish. Well i know that 2 mature male paradise fish "could" fight till death but maybe your fish just doesn't like any fish.

any schoolers I can think of would need to be small, as you are running a bit low on space in there. If you were to go with schoolers, you'd want about 6, with your current stock in there you probably won't want anything much larger than an inch or so to keep your stocking level modest.

If the paradise fish killed your danios, I would be really wary of putting anything small in the mid/top level of the tank. On the other hand, dwarf (small) corys would work. They are very active and tend to hang out around the bottom, so they would be out of the paradise fishes' domain.

I was told that knight gobys were freshwater by the lfs, i will never go there again. When i get rid of those, what else will i have room for? I would like a little more activity/movement in the tank, would any schooling fish be possible with the combination that i have?

Sounds fine... The only problem are the knight gobies... Which are brackish water fish... They need their own 29 gallon aquarium with 1 tablespoon of aquarium/marine salt per 5 gallons of water. They can live in freshwater... and in almost full saltwater... but only for small amounts of time before stress occurs... This tends not to be fatal... But it will shorten the fish's lifespan.

I have a 20 gallon planted aquarium with a aquaclear HOB filter. I have:

1 male paradise fish
1 female paradise fish
1 male ram
1 female ram
2 knight gobys
1 zebra danio (i rescued him from a friend who was leaving for college and any other zebra danios i got the paradise fish would kill except this one!)

Am i overstocked? Or do i have room for more fish?

I'm surprised that the Paradise Fish could catch the Danios. I'd recommend getting some more Danios, not getting the long-fin version as they are slower than the normal-finned Danios.

i just put the barbs in there since i'm sure tim would've sooner or later, and yes, loaches and cories stay towards the bottom of the tank, and they both do a farly good job of cleaning out the crud and stuff of the gravel and they dig a little so your gravel looks clean and nice

Tiger Barbs? I dunno about that, because they like to nip other fish's fins. Paradise fish are a nice slow moving target. You'd need like 8 of them to keep them from bothering other tankmates, and that would over-stock your tank.

I would suggest either filling out your school of danios and adding a couple Kuhli loaches or getting a small school (about 6) of Tetras (either Blue Flame, Von Rio, or Diamonds are good choices).
