How would a small angelfish, do alone in a 20 gallon tank, until it grows big to put in another tank.

20 gallon tall or long? Longs are too short in the long term - so you'd have to rehouse the fish when it gets taller. A 20 tall will work for a single angel, or an actual pair (although a 29 gallon would be better).

tall tanks are needed for angelfish. Where as most fish grow in length, angels grow in length and in height. So a 20 high is ok for awhile. I currently have a 3 inch angelfish in my 20 high now. 29 is better,

But when they are adults they would do well in a 75 gallon with a group of them.

For a short time it would be ok, but a bigger tank is recommended for Angels. As already stated, it's better to have a tall tank, as Angels grow quite big & beautiful.

That's a 20 long. It's OK for now, but when your fish is closer to 7 to 8" tall it'll be rather cramped.

The good news, since you're in the USA, is that PetSmart sells 29 gallon tanks (same footprint as yours but 5" taller) cheaper than anyone else (short of a garage sale or Craig's List) and a 29 will fit whatever stand you have the 20 long on since they're the same size (you can also use the same hood, light, gravel, and quite possibly filter). A 29 would be ideal for your angel and possibly even a second one (provided they're a pair or simply get along which can happen if they're the same sex, especially if they're female).
