I used to ..then went from community tank to Oscars..now I gave my Oscars away and am going to do a community again.

Just wanted to see if anyone else has had this and any experiences?
Contemplating getting some more

Yes, we have one in our 55 gal community tank.... Doesn't seem to bother any other fish.... Just kind of stays at the top...... Rather timid - even fleeing from guppies when they come too close.... Does love the occasional live cricket treat! People tend to think our butterfly fish is dead because it appears as almost motionless and stays at the top......

To thine own self be true...

Wow the ones I had were never timid lol.
They'd swallow what they could that ventured to the top..and killed a few we figured were too big for their mouths by trying. Some hatchet fish we got were seriously too big for their mouths, but they'd bite them trying..and the hatchet fish would die from the injury. Fed ours crickets/moths/mealworms and big flakes (couldn't see the smaller ones)..plus I kept a few trios of guppies in the tank to supply it with baby guppies.

Being strict surface dwellers, I found most fish to be safe with them... until feeding time. Even with sinking pellets, the other fish would swim to the top in excitement. This only caused aggression from the butterfly.

my single butterfly sounded like a school of piranhas when he got live food (my kids loved catching various bugs for it). it never strayed far from a large patch of floating plastic plants in the corner of the tank, and it never bothered other fish.

keep in mind- they require very little, none if possible, water movement. they are not designed to float around fighting currents. i also found out the hard and sad way that they can jump out of the smallest of openings in your hood.

also don't keep them with smaller fish as they will EaT tHeM!!!!! they have very big mouths for their body size, so tetras etc are a definite no no in your community tank if you get one of these
