thanks. i imagine they probably have eaten the eggs because the java moss isn't too dense.

so just normal knitting wool will be fine? are they fussy about colour? i will definitely try that.

It's not the same type of killifish, but the fry are about 1" now. They should be bigger if I did more water changes, gave them a warmer temperature and perhaps a bigger tank. I may move soon so I am hesitant to getting more tanks just yet.

do you think i should get my male another female? is he going to be upset by himself?

how big are your fry now (length-wise)? did you find them easy to raise?

sorry to hear that. my brother has a killifish that bumped into something sharp and the eye has been permanently disfigured but she's still alive and laying eggs. =/ I have some fry about 3 months old.

I'm guessing that it may have been the male that was a little rough on her or she bumped into something. It doesn't seem like anything serious though.

i think my breeding efforts may have to be postponed

i noticed today that my female appears to have an injury on the side of her head/eye. it looks scraped (but not raw and red) and a little fuzzy.

i've treated with a fungus medication... but i'm not sure what could have caused the injury. poor girl.

i'll keep you posted and would appreciate any help!

They aren't fussy about color... I'm not sure about wool. Most people I know use boiled acrylic yarn. The darker the color, helps you find the eggs a bit easier.

hello! i just got a pair of gold australes (aphyosemion australe) and had a couple questions about them. firstly, how much do they normally cost? i got my for $4CAN at an auction, and just wondered if that was a good deal. also, i was wondering if anyone has had any experience breeding these guys and raising the fry.

i found a bit of information about them in some of the books i have, but any tips and practical advice would be great!

They should have spawned. Killifishes lays eggs about everyday and the problem sometimes is that they eat it. You should just toss some yarn(boiled) in there, you don't necessarily have to make a mop. Just a nice clump where they can go in and lay eggs. This method is just if you don't want to collect eggs. After like a week just take out the parents and wait about 2-3 weeks and see if you have any fry.

Niggit,
The eggs are very visible, try a mop, Wind some wool about 3o times around a 8 inch book, tie it with a strand of wool, then cut the wool opposite side, tie a small cork with the strand of wool and float in tank I use dark green wool, the eggs will show up quite plainly, I then put the mop in a seperate small tank the eggs will take about 10 days to hatch.
Bert
PS Try www. killies. com
plenty of info, it is a Singapore Forum some of it is advanced info, but under the Introduction heading some useful tips.
Good luck keep at it.

can you see the eggs once they've been laid? the fish have been in their "breeding setup" for over a week now, but i can't see any eggs.

the tank is 2.5 G and is kept at about 75F. there is a thin layer of medium-sized gravel (black) on the bottom, a rock for shelter, and a big clump of java moss for a spawning material.

i feed the fish brine shrimp or blood worms once a day, and flakes at least once a day. the female is definitely gravid, and the male seems to be interested in her.

is it possible they haven't spawned yet, or are they eating the eggs as they lay them, or are they too small to see with the naked eye?

thanks!

today i bought a 2 1/2 gallon tank. i plan to put a little "seeded" gravel in it from one of my other tanks, and fill it with water from the 29G that the pair is currently in. i will also put a rock or two for shelter and some sort of plant. then i'll move the pair to the smaller tank.

after a week or two, i plan to move the parents back into the 29G and leave the eggs to hatch in the 2 1/2 gallon.

sound good?
