Hi everyone,
Inspired by the logbook feature of this website, but wanting a more permanent version that doesn't require internet connection, I have cadged together an MS Excel freshwater aquarium logbook that I have found, in testing in the last few weeks, immensely useful. It allows you to record the results of tests, record your fishy inventory, and calculate capacity and weight according to the dimensions of your tank. It also calculates an ideal chemistry of your tank based on your inventory.Another feature is that it calculates your tank's bio-load based on the 1 inch per gallon rule of thumb (allows you to adjust that to 1.5 inches/gallon for medium bodied fish, 2 inches /gallon for heavy bodies fish, and 5 inches/gallon for goldfish).
Limitations:
Calculations work well only for traditional rectangular tanks. Does not record plants or anything non-fish beside snails.

If anybody is interested in a copy, I have two versions: U.S./U.K.-centric and metric-centric. E-mail me at [a href="mailtoillyquiet@yahoo.com "]sillyquiet@yahoo.com [/a] if interested.

Here is a link for the spreadsheet I put together for a similar purpose. I didn't get to the logsheet part (the next logical step for my spreadsheet), but perhaps you can find a way to incorporate this effort into your own so you can take the concept further. I can't wait to see what you come up with!!!

Wow. I cannot believe you entered all those fish into your spreadsheet. That is something I thought about doing for my project but the scope of the data entry work intimidated me. With your permission, I can sure use that list of fish for my little project! That was some great work!

By all means please use the info! If you can provide a link to the original Spreadsheet I'd appreciate it. Good luck, and post a link here once you complete it!

Just right-click and download the version you prefer! And please, let me know what you think.

Update:
Versions 4.1 and 4.2 available. Get 'em while they are lukewarm!

Have you guys ever thought about converting this primitive spread sheet into database using MS Access / MS VB ... that is what I have done. It takes a little bit of programming in VB, but the advantages are far greater. You have a professional looking database with a lovely user friendly interace. Check out my personal web page at geocities.com for a copy. Enoy.

Thought about it... decided why complicate and slow down what is really a simple application with kludgey semi-portable garbage like VB? So I left it as a 'primitive' spreadsheet.

i prefer primitive anyway, less things can go wrong

Wow Silly! This looks great! Now all I need to do is figure out how to keep a PC next to my tank

I will probably not be migrating beyond Excel as it has everything I need (and more), however if someone else is interested in going the Access/VB route I'm sure everyone here would be interested. I'd like it if I could use a VB application to upload my stocking solutions to my web site, or possibly save them off for sharing later.

Something you might not be able to do with your primitive spreadsheet create advanced sql queries ... which is decided advantage s/w like us using "kludgey semi-portable garbage like VB" VB. You have the power to query your DB and find out what was your Ph level two month ago and compare that with your current ph level and if adding fish have changed your ph level or nitrite level. You can checkto see if your tank is gradually developing Ammonia by charting your data.

You are more than welcome to stay in the dark and use something Ancient and primitive as Excel but if you want a copy that written not only in Access but also converted recently into Oracle, email and I will send you a copy.

There's a descrepency between the Pearl Gourami. You have it listed at max size of 2.80 but FP says its 4.7?

That's not a discrepancy... that's a mistake!
I have corrected it in the files available at the above site, you can download one of those, or on the copy you have now: go to the "data" tab, scroll down to the pearl gourami entry, and replace the "Max Size" field with the correct figure.

rohnds.. I am sure everyone is very excited about your ability to program in VB .

I think everyone has their own 'comfort zone' with software applications. And while one may be seemingly better than another, they each have their own uses. I myself, do like access for many things. However, a co-worker of mine uses excel (and VB macros) to do the same or better than I do in access (I don't know VB, so I stick with the canned macros)

I have downloaded both of the above spreadsheets (one just a minute ago), and will use those, as I transfer them to my PDA, and I can not edit an access file on my PDA. (at least without buying software). But I would like to also use the Access version. However, I wasn't able to find it on your website. So that seems to be the advantage with Excel, I can 'access' it... lol. Anyway, Rohn, if you could send a link or a copy to me, that would be great.

brneyedblonde@comcast.net

One request I have for everyone, and for FP profiles, etc. When you do the profiles of the fish, it would be easier to sort by the common name without the variety listed first. For example, I was told I should get corys for my tank. No one tells me which kind or where to look. So I would like a spot that lists Cory, then all of the varities, peppered, panda, dwarf, etc. At least then I could pick which one was best.

Thanks everyone for sharing your tools with us too lazy to do them on our own!

Sure I can do some advance queries etc, but it's a fish tank! I
