just like to clarify that archers are also native to northern australia - which is only a hop, skip and a jump from se asia anyway...

Calla gets a gold star for Australian grammar. (glad you didn't take the good natured teasing the wrong way)

Quite a good deal different. RES are illegal here.

It does depend on the turtle size and activity level how many of the fish they will eat.
I sort of expected that some would get eaten... should have made that clearer.

And REALLY big (that better Miss Wish?)

It depends on the turtle, though.

At my fish store, somebody put feeder guppies in the turtle tank, and the turtles never even give them a second glance. Now they are out of control, so we put a few goldfish in there to eat the guppies (and they are doing a fine job at it). All of the fish are small enoughto be eaten, but the turtles don't bother going after them because they are well-fed.

They are red ear sliders and musk turtles, so I don't know how different they are from Australian turtles.

"Are you people serious?

Don't bother adding fish unless they're intended to be food or if the fish are larger than the turtle, which would be fairly cruel in a 4ft tank."

AGREED!

I'd also like to point out that Archers are Australian Natives, I've caught them on fly.

I do apologise, I didn't read the size of your tank before.

The rainbows are good pick, and if you can get doubolai's as well, and trifasciata's they're also good smallish tank fish.

Are you people serious?

Don't bother adding fish unless they're intended to be food or if the fish are larger than the turtle, which would be fairly cruel in a 4ft tank. In a larger tank, you'd have a lot more species to choose from, and would possibly be able to keep rainbows in there successfully.

If you are desperate to keep a native schooling fish, look into Australian Graylings Prototroctes maraena, but make sure you know what you're doing before you get them as they are classed as a vulnerable species, and obtain them legally.

What species of turtle are you getting?
Pretty much all of our turtles are highly carnivorous, opportunistic feeders which will have no problem catching fish in a tank.
Generally speaking, turtles of the genus Emydura (Maquarie short necked turtles, kreffts turtles etc) aren't as successful when it comes to catching fish because they aren't equipped with a long neck, and they feed on more vegetation than our other turtles do..

Another question..
Are you licenced to keep a turtle?
(Disregard the question if you're in Victoria or Canberra.)

Also..
Archer fish can be found in freshwater, brackish and saltwater in northern Australia. You can catch them in pretty much all water sources up there.

That whole Gondwanaland thing eh Jase?

I'd steer clear of barra, they grow REAL big... and pellet fed ones will taste ikky in case you thought of eating it.

Are they melantonia Splendida?

Yep, Melanotaenia splendida splendida to be exact.

archers are SA i'm pretty sure

Archerfish (Toxotes jaculator and related species) are brackishwater fish native to the mangrove forests of Southeast Asia. Also, they get like a foot long and are very active fish, so most people aren't able to keep them. Very cool fish though... I like to handfeed the ones we get in at the LFS.

archers are SA i'm pretty sure and they require a ~125 that's only ~3/4 full, and he specified that this was a 4ft tank, scat are brackish, i'd suggest getting rid of the turtle also and going w/ a toadfish tank (~Sin~'s idea)

Are they melantonia Splendida?

I've got a school of them, very active and boisterous fish.

They'll wet you if you feed with the lid off!

I recommend Queensland/eastern rainbows... They are very fast and have beautiful colors.

Go the Rainbows, or Failing that, Scat, archers, or even a barra or two.

But be warned, most of these fish require large tanks, so if something small is what you're after (say a 3ft) then I would say some of the smaller rainbows.

Galaxias?
Firetail gudgeon?
Rainbows?
Smelt?

tandanus cats will get too big, so unless you have n 8X2, i'd avoid them (even though they are cheap and small)

you might want to add some atyidae shrimp or even baby machrobrachiums.

you gotta do rainbowfish - we have lots of different types, they are beautiful when acclimatised and happy (they often look very plain in the petshop) but i would really warn against mixing fish with turtles - they are clever and patient hunters and love fresh meat!!!
