I research a lot on the internet, and visit numerous forums. Fishkeeping, etc is half opinion and half fact. I take out the facts and develop my own opinions based on experience.

I use the Internet and FP. There are other places online that deal with SPECIFIC information which I find I must go there to get it, but 90% of the time, FP seems to sum it up.

Though, I am doing a lot of research again on a "Showy Fish (or Fishes)" for a 53GAL tank. Post in the General Section.

I use FP FP FP FP FP FP FP...and FP.
I do a little web research as well.
Also I have used experience to my advantage.

I use myself in the first person because even though I have kept fish for years, I still consider myself a newbie because there's always so much to learn!

Fishkeeping is similar to sex in my opinion.

I too have read extensively on the subject in mags, books and online. I've found the most info on FP so decided to make this my "home" for info. I also use a couple other forums that pertain to specifics (plants, discus, etc.). When I come up with a question I can't research on my own, I post it here.

I worked in a good pet store for 2-3 years - and that was when my interest began - even though it took me another 15 years to get my first tank. Since then, books, the web and good ole FP...

u owe it to ur pets to do as much research as possible before buying them. but experience is the ultimate teacher, no matter what a beginner will make mistakes, and thats ok. gotta crawl before u can walk.

I have the habit of thoroughly researching anything that comes to animals... which is why I know all sorts of things about like, cats and dogs and rats when there's no chance to have any of those until I move out of the house. Besides researching (and thankfully finding FP BEFORE I got my tanks), my mom also kept fish like 10+ years ago and I have a few aquarium books as well as a decent library at my disposal.

I learn a lot from reading posts and articles here and on other sites. I have bought a few books too. Learning never seems to end. I use it all as references when needed too. The best way to clear things up in your head sometimes is to participate in these forums.

Fishkeeping is similar to sex in my opinion.

As much as reading is important, the 'hands on' aspect of it is critical too. I have come a long way since I started out with my first disastrous tank years ago!

I read Freshwater Aquariums for Dummies, I ask a bunch of questions,at a bunch of BBs, and read what ever I could find, doing BBs searches, and WEB searches, and I took quizes, and asked a bunch more questions. and flagged threads that MAY pertain to my situation or was an area of interest.
and did I say I asked a BUNCH of questions.

I was just wondering...

I've learned so much from participating in the fishprofiles forums, and I never would've learned so much without them. I notice that there are plenty of new members who already understand a lot about fishkeeping. Where do you guys get your information? Just snooping around on the internet?

I've learned a lot by reading threads and profiles here on FP and reading books about species of fish that I keep or am interested in. I've also done a lot of research on my own on-line. I ask a lot of questions at the LFS (some of the folks know what they're talking about, some don't, and some are honest and say they don't know). Also, some of what I know is just from experience. I don't have as much experience as other people here, but I'm getting there!

I had read the FAQ's included on FP that I found on another site...fins I believe, don't have it right now cause I'm under a different profile .

I had also come across FP while looking for profile data on fish (big surprise there ) but didnt' know about the forums till it was redesigned and the bookmark looked different then I avidly read every post before signing up as a member :%). Other than that it was just taking baby steps with my 10 till I kinda understood a bit better what was going on.

Now when I have a problem I'll post here, and do searches once someone has given me a slightly better idea what too look for (the Cynobacteria problem I've been having was one ).

^_^

I've learned about several different topics within the last week just by reading in this forum and getting responses in this forum. Then a couple online articles here and there.

my brother-in-law used to keep fish so I asked him for some ideas & suggested I buy a book.

I got a basic book from a big name retail pet shop chain based on looking through it.

Then I found some websites & settled on this one cause everyones so nice to newbies.

I'll probably buy a more indepth book next time I'm in a shop.:%)

Reading...books, magazine, internet, email lists, etc.

I also joined an aquarium club, that was a great idea. Even spending time in lfs helped me, seeing which fish are together, how they interact (or not), reading the store's information, talking with employees and even other customers.
