I just shy away from dusty cans in some grocery stores and those at clearance stores (not sure of freshness). Just avoid the cheap no name stuff. Probably a lot like the really cheap dog food...a dog can starve to death eating that garbage, won't do it to my dog, won't do it to my fish. |

Alot of the time i will buy the specific ingredients i want for a specific tank. For instance with live bearers ... an earthworm flake seems to produce more fry and more often. Spirulina is a good flake for color and health. Algae flakes are good fillers and provide some nutrition. So about one every 3 months its a pain mixing all the foods, but i know that the fish are getting the best nutrition for their needs. I also mix in freeze dried mysis shrimp, krill, bloodworms, shrimp pellets, and earthworm pellets. I personally think this is the best method. Cost is lower than buying cans of tetramin, but requires more time and research if i have recently changed a tank. Bdadawg |

I know they've been around a long time, and that familiar yellow can reminds me of a long time ago. But I usually just use the topfin brand at petsmart. |

I use Ocean Nutrition's Community Formula, which is a high quality food. It does cost more than the other brands, though... $5 for a 1oz container. The ingredients are salmon fillets, Euphausia pacifica plankton, squid, salmon eggs/salmon oil, Euphausia superba plankton/krill hydrolysate, sea clams, kelp, herring, adult brine shrimp, brine shrimp nauplii, MPAX (Marine Protein Amino Extract: fish meals, hydrolysates, select amino acids [arginine, histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, cystine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, valine]), wheat flour, corn meal, egg, lecithin, calcium chloride, magnesium sulfate, vitamin premix (ascorbic acid including stabilized vitamin C, dl-a-tocopheryl acetate, d-pantothenic acid, riboflavin, niacin, menadione, folacin, cholecalciferol, biotin, thiamine, retinol, pyridoxine, cyanocobalamin), carotenoid pigments (canthaxanthin/astaxanthin), artificial color, and preservative (ethoxyquin). Whew... ![]() I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash. |
mariosim![]() Enthusiast Posts: 207 Kudos: 245 Votes: 20 Registered: 28-Jul-2004 ![]() | compare all the ingrediants in various flake foods, and you will find most are the same. crude protien, fat, and moisture are almost the same. the first 8 to 10 ingred. are the same. i am now holding in my hand tetramin tropical flakes and bettamin tropical medley. everything matches, except there are large shrimp chunks in the bettamin. what is the differance? granted, flake food is a small percentage of my fish populations total calorie intake. but if everything seems the same, why not buy the cheapest (assuming all brands are fresh)? |
BeastKeeper![]() Big Fish Posts: 444 Kudos: 389 Votes: 47 Registered: 27-Apr-2004 ![]() | i feed all my cichlids Hikari and for my tropicals i just use petsmarts brand, Top Fin |
