Senegals get around a foot long I think, give or take a few... I love cichlids, but don't they have different pH requirements than a senegal? Unless they're not African... I've always wanted frontosas or whatever, they're so cool... but BIG... Discus are really pretty, but mad expensive. Right now, my bichir squabbles with the plec, so I don't think he'd do too well with a knife-- aren't they bottom dwellers too? :| Hmmm... So many options...

If it was a neccesity for discus to live by themselves, they would have gone extinct a long time ago .

brown african knife fish- although you may hardly see it. mine bothers nothing- not even white cloud fry. pictus cats may work.

i have never kept a senegal- how big does it get?

i agree with week end- keep away from the discus unless you can meet their demands.

if you can shoot for a 75 gallon tank you'll have a lot more options. any medium to large sized semi-aggressive cichlids should be fine with your bichir. however, most cichlids will either eat or uproot plants so that may not be the best option for you. if you'd like a few cichlids to consider though, let me know and I'll make some recommendations for you.
