Even if it was fake, I know that White Sturgeons do grow that big and such, and I live near a river that has them. |

I have had a copy of that photo for years....as well as one with a horse team pulling an even bigger sturgeon up a bank. Sturgeon can be easily caught from shore, and often do not fight an awful lot, but can take a lot of strength and stamina to pull them in....chances are he used an anchored pully. |

It almost looks like the guy is on a little boat. But then again, the guy looks like a fake silhouette. I'd be interested to know how they caught that thing. Scheibe |

However, if you had read further down I also mentioned: "In some areas the White Sturgeon is LandLocked." This means it cannot possibly run to the sea. There was a list on one website I was reading of 14 different lakes in North American where the White Sturgeon is Landlockedand still has been recorded at these immense sizes. So I think it still Classifies as the largest Freshwater Fish in the world. Come Play Yahtzee With Me! http://games.atari.com Http://www.myleague.com/yahtgames |

A trip to the sea is a trip to the sea. I understood the question to mean a fish that is strictly freshwater not an anadromous species. I got my info from a website as well. I think we can all agree that just because something is on a website it doesn't automatically make the info true or correct. One of the two websites is not quite accurate and I'm not an ichthyologist so I have no way of knowing. I concur, most people would probably consider you correct. Sorry for being Wrong. It is huge, reaching 120 cm, but that is still only 50 inches in length, and in 2003 the world record on this fish stands at 165kg. Where did you get that? P. gigas record stands at 337cm (132.7" or a hair over 11') and 369kg (813½ lbs), which is not as big as a white sturgeon, but a heck of a lot larger than the numbers you are quoting. |

It is huge, reaching 120 cm, but that is still only 50 inches in length, and in 2003 the world record on this fish stands at 165kg. The Arapaima Gigas, is larger, coming in at 13 feet in length, and weighing it at approximately 200kg, or 440 lbs at maturity. A goliath, but not the worlds largest freshwater fish. The White Sturgeon, Acipenser Transmontanus, is the Worlds Largest Freshwater fish. It lives in the Rivers and Lakes of North America, its primary river habitat being the Fraser River of British Columbia. Yes it is Anadromous, but only for a short time of its life, after which is returns to freshwater and remains there for the rest of its life. Heres a qoute from a website: "The Largest White Sturgeon ever reported was purported to to be over 818.18kg (1800LBS), taken near Mission BC. The prehistoric giant White Sturgeon may live over 150 years, and have been officially recorded as large as 629.14kg (1387LBS), with a maximum length of over 6.10m (20feet), making it the largest freshwater fish in the world". Some species of White Sturgeon are LandLocked, meaning they never go to sea, and still reach these massive sizes. Heres a link with some pictures and info for non-believers. http://www.ufishbc.com/all_about_sturgeon.htm And heres a picture of a Sturgeon caught weighing 1500Lbs. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v359/SneakyPete79/HugeSturgeon.jpg [/font] Come Play Yahtzee With Me! http://games.atari.com Http://www.myleague.com/yahtgames |

E-mail me and I can send you a vintage pic of a 1000+ pounder caught near Chilliwack. |
