my friend just got a 15usg tank and this will be his first. but he told me that he was going to use black lights to light the aquarium. i was told that black lights make the fish go blind! is this true? or his fish safe?

I am not sure but i would say they dont go blind. They use these blacklights on tanks sometimes to make the glowfish zebradanio glow.

Not sure about making the fish go blind but the black light could be used if housing nocturnal fish or blcind cave fish, that would highlight its pale colour.

Black lights emit a lot of UV. This can burn the fish, particularly the eyes. You can, however, use a black light for some time if a piece of TEMPERED glass is put between the light and the tank.

A friend of mine uses a black light: My advice is that if he isn't going to get fish that glow, don't get one. The colors of the fish are so hidden behind the black light. You're almost better off without a light at all.
