Mystery snails do not eat algae as their main source of food. If fed algae alone they will starve to death. They require fish food and only eat algea in passing. They also are not very efficient at digesting food and will produce more waste than the amount of algae they eat causing more algae. A mystery snail is not the answer to algae problems. Incidentally the mystery snail is the applesnail. Stores just didn't know what it was so they started calling them mystery snails. See http://applesnail.net/ for snail info.

That's not accurate. It's a myth started by people wanting to sell applesnails or who have starved their applesnails and seen them eating algae. I've raised thousands of applesnails and the species that will fit in your tank are carnivorous. They die quite quickly when fed only algae. Yes the samller species can sometimes be kept with bettas. What's your point there? They clean up leftover fish food and only eat small amounts of algae. The amount of waste they produce will only increase the nitrates and nutrients in the water leading to far more algae than they manage to consume. They produce some of the best plant and algae fertilizers you'll ever find. They are often used in fry tanks because they increase the production of algae and insuforia-microscopic critters eaten by fry that live off partially digested food and plant matter like algae. They will not solve any of your problems.
