For example, there's a blind cave fish from Iran - Iranocypris typhlops - known as the Blind Cave Barb. Take a look at it here. There's also a blind catfish that rejoices in the wonderful name of Satan eurystomus. Take a peek at this oddity here. This page mentions some more species you can look up, and also covers in detail the Blind Cave Characin, which is the fish you are thinking of as the "Blind Cave Fish" - Astyanax fasciatus mexicanus. It's a population of the more familiar above-surface Characin that became trapped in deep caves for many thousands of years and thus developed into a sightless fish - but one that doesn't lack the ability to survive by any stretch of the imagination! They should top out at about 2 inches. |
