There are many different species of cave fish, almost none of which are related to each other. Their blindness is a result of convergent evolution.

The cave fish you'll see in stores is the Blind Cave Tetra, which only gets about 2" long.

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

"Blind cave fish" covers a multitude of sins. For example, there's a blind cave fish from Iran - Iranocypris typhlops - known as the Blind Cave Barb. Take a look at it here.

There's also a blind catfish that rejoices in the wonderful name of Satan eurystomus. Take a peek at this oddity here.

This page mentions some more species you can look up, and also covers in detail the Blind Cave Characin, which is the fish you are thinking of as the "Blind Cave Fish" - Astyanax fasciatus mexicanus. It's a population of the more familiar above-surface Characin that became trapped in deep caves for many thousands of years and thus developed into a sightless fish - but one that doesn't lack the ability to survive by any stretch of the imagination! It's a tough little critter ...

I think linkinpark touched on this species before , concerning a study project, so presumably he means Astyanax fasciatus mexicanus is the species he wishes to acquire. They should top out at about 2 inches.
