Hi all newb here!

I know this is a big no no, but i did it anyway . I bought a fish on impulse today, I have no idea what it is, so I'm looking for some help IDing it.

Sorry I don't have any pics, because basically, as soon as I put it in the tank it hid, and because my tank is pretty heavily planted it's difficult to find. Its type of sole (thats all i can remember from the lable in the lfs), yellow/brown colour & spotted. It looks a bit like a small ray, but it's oval shaped.

ANyone got any ideas as to what it is?

Exactly how small is it? We have FW flounders where I work. They are very tiny right now, about two inches. Very cute too, and like a really fine substrate, preferably sand.

EDIT: and oh, welcome to FishProfiles!

My bet is on freshwater flounder as well.
I hope you have a very very large tank, as these guys easily reach very large sizes. Someone like Shinigami will be able to tell you just how big they get.
They need Sand substrate, gravel can injure them, they prefer cold water, and move into brackish, and saltwater as they mature.
Difficult fish to keep unless you are willing to provide what it needs.

Oval? Like a mini-ray? Sounds like a hillstream loach to me, too.

I'll go with Hillstream loach on this too as they're much more common than FW flounders.

Actually,
around here, flounders are much more common. You cant really do a blanket statement like that, everywhere is different. Espescially considering the flounder is a native north american fish- much easier to get a hold of them Hillstreams. I would not really at all say my Hillstream looks like a ray- hes very much more oval and has 2 fins on each side as opposed to the very symmetrical look of a flounder which has only 1 fin down each side.
Unfortunately this dude who asked isnt giving any more info.
He said "Its type of sole (thats all i can remember from the lable in the lfs) "
This qoute alone says Flounder to me.

in the UK, more likely to be a butterfly loach, which do look like sole.

I like to think that whoever designed marine life was thinking of it as basically an entertainment medium. That would explain some of the things down there, some of the unearthly biological contraptions
