| Breeding Blue tetras | |

Apparently the females have a bit of a larger tummy - but i had a look in the fish shop at the tank of them and i couldn't see any that has a tummy as big as my girl. I have 6 of them and none of them come close (in tummy size). So if she was pregnant how do i know for sure, and what do i do now?? Does anyone know much about breeding them? I have a community tank, but also have a spare 60L tank and a really small tank (10L?). Also i have never bred any fish before. Thanks for any help!!! P.S. my water is very acidic - 6.0 or below (my test kit doesn't go any lower) with lots of driftwood and rainwater (so i guess its soft, but i don't have a test kit for hardness). |

The one female being plump is normal for most tetras. I have a female lemon tetra that is the same way. If your tetras are all around the same age, then your other females (if you have any) will be rounding out as well. As for breeding them, it really isn't too hard. Condition the tetras (if you are sure that they are mature ) with live and frozen foods for a week or so. They should spawn during or just after this period if they feel like it. Water changes help, since clean water is always good, and sometimes will entice tetras to spawn. I don't actually have these fish though, so don't quote me on this. |

And eventually the other females will end up looking the same? How long do these tetras take to mature (ie weeks, months, years)? Thaks again! ![]() |

I don't know exactly how long it will take your tetras to mature, but I would venture to guess at least a few months. This depends on the individual fish, and how old they were when you bought them. Basically, it is just a guessing game. For instance, I have seven lemon tetras in my tank. I didn't think that they were fully mature yet. However, they spawned a couple of weeks ago, and again this morning! ![]() |
