As there are many different types of bristlenose, do the male and female have to be the exact same species???

Reports seem to indicate there are more than 50 species. If you buy from the same brood, you'll have the same fish, but otherwise, it's quite possible you'll end up with different species. They should cross breed, but don't know if this will impact your chances for success.

You sure can, try keeping the bottom bare w/o any gravels or sand.

I wouldn't have gravel. Just have a bare bottom tank with caves for them to breed in.

Do you guys know if having gravel would inhibit them from mating? Are their different species of albino bristle noses? I am quite curious. I have had a male and female for over a month now and no luck (yet). I don't know if the female has reached her "reproductive" maturity or not so I don't know if something wrong or if nature just has not taken it's course yet.

No i think that they would breed if you had gravel or not. It is just easier to clean and raise fry in a bare bottom tank. As far as i know there are a few types of albinos. There are normal ones, Dwarf and long fin ones.

Just make sure you have a cave or pipe or something they can go in to lay. To get mine to breed i do a 25%-30% water change one them then a day or two later they lay.
