My tank is about 5 months old and I am still having an algae problem. I have 4 corys. Do they do anything about brown algae and if they don't what can I get that will? I sometimes take my artificial plants out of the tank when they get covered in algae and wash them off under tap water. Is this bad?

cory's won't eat algae. washing the algae off won't do any harm, but getting an algae eater would help, there's plenty out there, have a flick through the fish profiles

You can try phosphate or silicate removers to help slow down the algae. All algae need phosphates and brown algae tends to like silicates but doing so may hurt any plants you are trying to grow. Adding plants will outcompete the algae by using up excess nutrients sort of like the removers. Otos are good little algae eaters especially for brown algae. They'll suck that stuff right up but get at least 2 since they like company. Make sure your tank isn't getting too much sunlight and you aren't overfeeding both add to an algae problem.

Before anything can be suggested, we need to know some things about your tank. How big is your tank, and what kind of light(s) do you have on it. What and how many fish do you have in your tank. How much and how often do you feed your fish?

Brown algae can be prevented quite easily if the proper procedures are done.
